Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
True Blessings Are From God: Can Curses Come From God As Well?
When it comes to the sharing of the gospel of Jesus, unfortunately, there's much imbalance in the messages that are being spread to listeners who don't take the time to verify for themselves all that God's word has to say on a subject. People are either encouraged to focus only on the blessings and goodness of God or exclusively on the fiery judgment of the Lord. What has happened to balance? The apostle Paul, plainly said, "Behold therefore the goodness AND severity of God..." (KJV, Romans 11:22).
The Need to Rightly Divide the Word of Truth
The need to rightly divide God's Word cannot be overstressed because failure to do so almost always leads to the drawing of erroneous conclusions, anti-biblical doctrines, confusion, and misunderstanding. For example, the famous New Testament scripture of St. John 3:16 which says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" has been taken to mean that God never becomes angry or tired of sin and that he will never move fiercely against those who stubbornly reject his correction. However, this thought can quickly be corrected through knowledge and acceptance of the truths presented in the rest of the Bible--those numerous other scriptures that few people bother to read.
Blessings and Curses in the Old and New Testaments
The 27th chapter of the book of Deuteronomy enumerates the many curses that would come upon the people of God if they choose to rebel against him after having heard his word and been informed of the consequences of disobedience. There are twelve consecutive verses in that chapter that begin, "Cursed be the man that...." Are we to think that these curses were actually to come from God or ones that he simply would allow the Satanic kingdom to place on the people or individual who had willfully turned his back on his him? After all, scripture simply reads, "Cursed be the man that...." It doesn't say God will curse the man who commits such and such sin. Nevertheless, the Bible clearly revealed that God will curse when we read in Genesis 12:3 where the Lord himself said to Abraham, "I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee...."
The Old Testament isn't the only one of the two covenants that speak of blessings and curses based on a man's obedience or disobedience to God. Just as the 27th chapter of Deuteronomy speaks of curses that are invited when we willfully disobey God, the 28th chapter of the same book speaks of the blessings that are to be expected when we obey him. The New Testament scripture of II Corinthians 16:22 says, "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha." The same passage in the Living Bible Paraphrased reads, "If anyone does not love the Lord, that person is cursed. Lord Jesus, come!"
It's important for Christians who share not some, but all of the gospel of Jesus to remember that as the divinely inspired authors of the Bible never attempted to hide the severity of God, neither did they attempt to suggest that there was no understanding in God's severity. The thoughts and intentions of every creature are wide open to his eyes (Hebrews 4:12-13). He understands those who run from him because they don't understand his ways, because they don't understand why some things are the way they are, and because they don't understand why they had to endure nightmares in their life. He also sees those who simply hate righteousness and love darkness (II Thessalonians 2:12, those who don't understand because they don't want to understand (II Peter 3:5), and those who reject his righteousness because they've established their own (Romans 10:3).
The subject of
blessings and
curses is an intense one on which the Bible is the only authority. Serious students of the Bible who seek answers for themselves, friends, and relatives might be interested in the $4.00 e-book, "Can Christians Be Cursed Through Witchcraft?" sold by HeavenlyManna.net.
