Calvina, the young battered wife of Duane, is in desperate need of a new start in life. Will her jealous husband, the mad man with whom she had been unequally yoked, prove too much to ever hope for a chance of staying together--a chance to fix her troubled marriage?
We encourage you to read the two main character profiles before reading the first chapter. We can be so wrong in the strong initial opinions we form of people, which we see in The Beauty Of Staying Together (originally published under the title: Detour), a story based on true events. If we believe the Bible, we should want to know what God's Word has to say about whether curses are real or not. Genesis 3:14, 18 say, "And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field. Upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life... Thorns also and thistles shall it (the earth) bring forth to thee..."
The first thing many people, including Christians, are shocked to learn is that God can, and does, curse things and people. In the passage we just read, the serpent was cursed as well as the earth. Before Adam and Eve sinned, the earth did not produce thorns and thistles. Thorns and thisles are the result of a curse pronounced by God. How can we say curses are not real? How can we say they are only superstition? Does not the earth still produce thorns and thistles? Of course it does.
And, scientists have discovered the python, as well as other serpents, carry a gene to develop limbs. But we know snakes and serpents do not grow limbs. Why? If they have the gene to develop them, why do they not grow? In light of the curse about which we've just read, we cannot call that superstition, nor can we deny fact. What's more is it should strike us as strange that every culture on earth has ancient stories about dragons. In the most basic sense of the word, dragons are "snakes" or "serpents" with legs and the ability to walk.
In the 27th chapter of Deuteronomy, beginning at the ninth verse, we read a long list of curses that result from disobedience. And we read in Genesis that Noah cursed his grandson. So, we cannot deny that the Bible clearly tells us that curses are real. For one thing, any and everything that God does is real. And according to the book of Genesis, God was the Author of the first curse. However, satanic curses are also real.
