Should Parents Spank Their Children According to Proverbs 13:24 and 23:13-14?

Many people, including Christians, teach that parents should not spank their children for three principle reasons:

1. They might find themselves in trouble with the law.

2. It is against what psychologists and parenting experts teach about spanking children.

3. Parents must remember that Proverbs 13:24 and 23:13-14 are Old Testament Scriptures, and we are now living under the New Testament.

First, true believers in Jesus do not place what psychologists say above what God's Word says. Much psychology is rooted in demonic doctrines of which the Bible clearly warns. It is no wonder that much of what psychology--especially modern psychology--teaches is in total conflict with the Scriptures of the Bible.

Should parents spank their children according to Proverbs 13:24 and 23:13-14, if doing so puts them at risk for having problems with the law? That's a decision each individual must make. But let us say this: Being obedient to God's Word inevitably puts believers at odds with the law, family, co-workers, friends, and even total strangers. This is why millions of Christians have been martyred. They lived and preached the gospel of Jesus though they had been ordered not to do so.

Now, what about Christians who teach that parents should not spank their children according to Proverbs 13:24 and 23:13-14, because Proverbs is an Old Testament book? They teach that we are now under grace...the New Testament, also known as the New Covenant. Therefore, we must not implement the things of the Old Covenant. To put forth such teachings shows lack of understanding of the two Covenants as a whole.

Chapter nine of the book of Hebrews is one of the parts of the New Testament that explain that under grace, CHANGES were made. "Changes" does not translate to discarding something. It means some things changed, but others remain the same. This is why Jesus said, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill" (Matthew 5:17).

Concerning the changes, we read in Hebrews, "For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law" (Hebrews 7:12).

One of the changes was that followers of the living God under the New Testament are ministers of mercy, not of wrath (2 Corinthians 3:6). This does not mean that people who refuse to obey God can now escape His wrath. On the contrary, to reject Jesus invites a far worse punishment than rejecting Old Testament Law did (Hebrews 10:29). Because Christ's servants are ministers of mercy, we cannot and must not kill an unruly child. Nevertheless, the Old Testament instruction to spank the unruly child has not been taken away. It is not one of the changes that occurred when Jesus came, as it does not involve killing the disobedient, or the sacrifice of animals, or any other thing that was truly exclusive to the Old Covenant. The specific changes are revealed throughout the New Testament. All things that were not changed, remain. Again, this is why Jesus told us He did not come to take the Law away, but rather to fulfill it. So, should parents spank their children according to Proverbs? Yes.

We read, "He that spareth his rod hateth his son. But he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes (from an early age)" (Proverbs 13:24).

Withhold not correction from the child, for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thous shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell" (Proverbs 23:13-14).
