Review of D.O.A. 1949 for Christian Movie Discussion
D.O.A. 1949, directed by Rudolph Maté, and staring Edmond O'Brien as Frank Bigelow, is a film noir that figures among the best films of classic American cinema. We give it five stars and two thumbs up, and highly recommend it for movie discussion groups that want to discuss the film from a biblical perspective. This is one of the angles that we don't see in the many lively discussions D.O.A. has generated down through the years. There have been remakes. However, we are recommending the original film made in 1949, which you may watch now, here on our site. (Please scroll down.)
The Thought-Provoking Plot of D.O.A.
Frank Bigelow, (Edmond O'Brien), has it all: He's an accountant who works for himself in the small, quiet and safe little town of Banning in California. Paula (Pamela Britton), his girlfriend, is crazy about him. He's handsome, healthy, educated and well-to-do financially. But he doesn't seem to fully realize just how good he has it...just how much so many others wish they had half of what he has. Mr. Bigelow is a womanizer who has the itchy twitchy to take a vacation from Paula in San Francisco...where there are plenty of women. Suddenly and unexpectedly, his world is shattered to pieces. Someone has poisoned him for some reason. And he has only about twenty-four hours to live...and to investigate his own murder!
As you watch D.O.A., pay close attention to the signs Mr. Bigelow misses...signs that could have saved his life. Focus in on his careless attitude toward the good things in life he had, but didn't really appreciate. Had he clung to them, would he have met with such a fate? Many viewers found themselves on one of two sides regarding his fate. Some were not very sympathetic. Others, despite all, were so sympathetic they even attempted to rewrite his tragic end to save his life.
Christian Movie Discussion about D.O.A.
Some have stated they would not have spent their last hours on earth investigating their murder. Why? Because facing eternity without making peace with the Creator becomes the number one priority for all who believe the gospel of Jesus...though they might not practice it.
Christians even tossed around the idea of possible reactions were they ever faced with helping someone found in such a situation. Would you pray for Mr. Bigelow to rethink his relationship...or lack of...with the Lord? Would you share the gospel with him? Would you discourage him from investigating his own murder? Would you believe it's possible for God to miraculously save his life? Would you look for some type of natural remedy in the United States or abroad?
Though Frank Bigelow in D.O.A. is a fictional character, many real people have found themselves suddenly facing death whether by murder, disease or an accident. Therefore, such a situation is not at all fiction. We cannot really know what we would and would not do when suddenly facing matters of life and death. However, these matters and questions should be pondered in light of Scripture. This is one way believers in Jesus learn to apply God's Word to real life. For example, some believe that a person always receives some type of warning before he or she faces death. But is that what the Bible says? We read, "For man also knoweth NOT his time, as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men (people) snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them." (Ecclesiastes 9:12)
God indeed might reveal to a person when his or her time is near. However, we've just learned that man does not automatically know when he is near death. The fish and birds caught in nets represent how an individual can be so suddenly trapped by death. And just as the birds and fish did not see it coming, there are times when people do not see just how close their death is. And now, let's watch D.O.A. Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
