Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Understandably, many people, including children, fear death because it is the unknown. If change, even good change, in this present life proves unnerving for most people, there's no wonder that the thought of dying causes some to panic. Can the fear of death be conquered? Will that victory endure when it's one's time to cross over? Various remedies and solutions to overcome the fear of death have been offered by philosophers, practitioners of Eastern thought, psychics, and psychologists. Suggestions to face one's fears as a means of conquering them continue to be made since they have proven successful in many cases.
However, facing death is unlike facing almost any other fear on earth because it can't really be confronted until it is time to die. Therefore, facing a fear of heights by climbing mountains or facing a fear of tarantulas by learning how to properly handle them can't be compared to facing death by actually dying. The climber will come down from the mountain and the one who handles the tarantula will eventually put the spider down to handle him another day if he wishes. But, the one who dies will not die one week and come back the next week released from a fear of death.
Even the attempts to surround oneself with things that pertain to the dead can't replace the actual experience of dying. People go to funerals everyday. They select tomb stones and burial plots beforehand. They write a will years before the time comes to leave this world. However, for most of them these activities simply accomplish what's necessary to be done in physical preparation for the inevitable.
The Bible offers insight into the experience of death and dying, an insight that many lack due to their reluctance to read God's word for themselves. Few people realize that in addition to the truths that are taught about death in biblical scripture there's also divine counsel for those who live with a fear of death. The New Testament scripture of Hebrews 2:14-15 says, "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself (Jesus) likewise took part of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage."
What does this scripture have to do with overcoming the fear of death? What is the center of the message? The fear of death usually involves wondering what discomfort will be experienced once the spirit leaves the physical body. Also, God has set in man a will to live forever so all thought contrary to this work of the Creator is unnatural and rejected by his creatures. The scripture of Ecclesiastes 3:11 reads, "...He hath set the world in their heart." The Living Bible (paraphrased version) records this scripture as saying that, "...God has planted eternity in the hearts of men, even so, man cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end." If the creature knew that he only had to face death once, would not be harmed in doing so, and was guaranteed to live again for eternity, the base of his fears crumbles (1 Corinthians 15:54-58).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
