Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
People who've had participation in the martial arts, yoga, Eastern meditation or practically any of the practices originating from the Far East have heard the concept of man being composed of mind, body, and soul. "Body" refers to the physical body of a person, "mind" to the "seat" of his thoughts and intentions, and "soul" to some ghost-like existence of him. This, understandably, can be confusing for some people because they've also heard the term "spirit" or "spirit man." What is the difference between soul and spirit? Is there any difference?
Sometimes "mind" and "soul" are used interchangeably, at other times, they're both used to reinforce meaning. There is, however, a difference between soul and spirit. Knowing this difference begins with an understanding that man is a three part being consisting of a physical body required for life on planet Earth, a soul or mind, and a spirit man. The biblical scripture of 1 Thessalonians 5:23 reads, "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly (completely); and I pray God your whole spirit, and soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."
The apostle Paul spoke of the necessity of a person's entire make-up being in right standing with God. Spirit and soul are mentioned separately by Paul because there's a difference. The difference between soul and spirit is that the soul refers to the mind, heart, or conscious of a person while "spirit" refers to an actual spiritual body that resides within the physical body until death at which time it is "released" and continues to exist. These truths and definitions are revealed in the Bible, but a dedicated study to grasp them is required. For example, Jesus said, "...Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind... (KJV, Mark 12:30). Scripture doesn't speak of loving God with all one's spirit because love resides in the mind or soul. However, those who love God worship him in spirit and truth (St. John 4:24). Yes, a man's spirit body actually worships God along with his physical body that can sing, clap, lift hands, bow down, and give thanks and due praise to the Lord.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
