Sacred Writings and Religious Sayings: What Wisdom do they Offer?
Compilations of scriptures that are generally considered to be sacred writings include: the Hindu Vedas, the Buddhist Tipitaka, the Qu'ran of Islam, the Guru Granth Sahib of the Sikh religion, the ancient Egyptian book of the dead, and the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible. From these writings come religious sayings, but do those sayings and teachings really offer wisdom for life now and for the hereafter? How do we know which sacred writings can be trusted to truly offer wisdom? Is there a way to know? Yes, there is.
The Bible
Consider the wisdom in the following biblical scriptures. Isaiah 40:22, written more than 2,000 years ago, teaches that the earth is spherical. There were no telescopes in those days so people thought that Earth was flat. How did Isaiah know that it was a sphere? Leviticus 17:11 says, "For the life of the flesh is in the blood...." Life cannot be sustained if there is too much blood loss. This is a perfect teaching of biology in the sacred writings inspired by the God of Israel (natural and spiritual Jews).
In Ecclesiastes 3:14 we have the first law of thermodynamics, also known as the law of the conservation of matter. The biblical scripture of Job 30:5-6 teaches that there were cave men in ancient times. Ecclesiastes 1:6-7 describes the circulation of wind and the waters of the earth as accurately as a meteorologist! Dinosaurs are described in the book of Job, and the passages of Genesis 22:17 and Jeremiah 33:22 state that the stars of the heavens cannot be counted. This is absolutely amazing considering that these sacred writings are the oldest in the world.
There is no technology that can tell scientists how many stars are in space. The scriptures of Genesis 1:11-12, 1:21, and 1:25 give an actual definition of biogenesis. The passages of Psalm 135:7, Jeremiah 10:13, Job 36:27-29, Ecclesiastes 1:7, and Isaiah 55:10 speak on hydrology, flawlessly describing evaporation of water, precipitation, lightening, and the circulation of the waters of the earth. This is just a small sampling of the wisdom of the God of Israel, the Holy Spirit behind the sacred writings collectively known as the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.
Teófila Gottfried, the author of the book, ¿Qué tiene que ver conmigo? (What Does It Have To Do With Me?), reminds us of just how ancient the Holy Bible is. She writes:
"When we think of Alexander the Great, Plutarch, or Tacitus, we must go back into antiquity. And, even in antiquity, the Old Testament books had already become ancient to those historical figures. The sacred books of the Indians (East Indians who are Hindu), known as the Vedas, were written 500 years after Moses. And, the Qu'ran, compared with the Bible, is a recently released book." (Quote translated from the original Spanish, pg. 19, words in parenthesis are not the words of the author, Teófila Gottfried).
The Other Sacred Writings and Religious Sayings
It is not a matter of opinion, rather it is a matter of fact that the scriptures of the Bible were inspired by a an all-knowing and all-wise being. That being is known by many names and titles in the Old Testament, names and titles that reveal his power, attributes, authority, love, and wisdom. The fullness of that being is now in the person of his Son whose name is a "culmination" of the names of the God of Israel in the sacred writings of the Old Testament--JESUS (2 Corinthians 1:20, Philippians 2:10, Acts 4:10-12). The books of Corinthians, Philippians, and Acts are books of the New Testament.
The amazing wisdom of the Bible, not to mention the plethora of prophesies that have been fulfilled in every detail of what was foretold, is unmatched. There are no other sacred writings and religious sayings that even come close to teaching the things that the Christian Bible teaches. The word of God is infallible in its teachings in the areas of the sciences, history, and pre-history. It is flawless in its prophecies. Why would it not be flawless in its spiritual teachings?
"If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema (accursed), Maranatha (come, Lord Jesus!" (The Bible, 1 Corinthians 16:22). People who have never been exposed to the gospel of Jesus preached in the sacred writings of the Bible are not in the same category as those who heard the gospel, and have chosen to reject Christ simply because they love darkness. The Lord looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7) and considers what a persons understands and what he does not understand.
