Jesus Was a Prophet Like Moses and Elijah?
Moses was used greatly by God, as was the prophet Elijah. Some say that Jesus was a prophet who also was used greatly by God. But, some also say that the signs and wonders he performed do not make him a greater prophet than someone like Moses who also performed signs and wonders in Egypt. To bring things into perspective regarding the status of these men, we must look at what was said about still another prophet, John the Baptist.
Jesus Was a Prophet Who Revealed the Status of John the Baptist
Christ said, "Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist..." (KJV, Matthew 11:11). Those are very powerful words. The Lord Jesus is clearly telling us that John the Baptist is greater than Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and all the other prophets before him.
Now then, we see that it is not even correct to say that Moses, Elijah, and John the Baptist were all prophets of equal greatness in the eyes of God. This realization is essential when faced with the statement that Jesus was a prophet, no more. Now, what did the great prophet, John the Baptist, say about Jesus? What he said is extremely important.
John said, "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. But, he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me" (Matthew 3:11, 13-14). Jesus was a prophet and no more? Such a statement cannot possibly be true in light of biblical scripture.
John the Baptist, a greater prophet than Moses and Elijah, knew that he was not worthy even to carry the shoes of Jesus, the Son of God. John understood that he needed to be baptized by Christ. He understood that he could only baptize with water, but that Jesus baptized with the Holy Spirit of God and with fire.
This is an overwhelmingly powerful affirmation directly from the word of God that vehemently puts down and destroys the falsehood that Jesus was a prophet and no more. In light of the truth that Jesus is immensely greater than John the Baptist who was greater than the great Moses and Elijah, it is absolutely ilogical to say that the Son of God was no more than a prophet like any of the other prophets of the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.
Now that we see that it is NOT biblical to say that Jesus was a prophet and no more, the door is open to ask, "Just who was he?" Who was this extremely special and powerful, only begotten Son of God? Is there a reason why Bible-believing Christians hold fast to the truth that Jesus was God in the flesh? Yes, there is. And, that evidence in the scriptures is just as plain and clear as that that utterly destroys the lie that Jesus was a prophet and no more.
Learn why Christ is so many things that are not said about any of the other prophets, even the great John the Baptist. The scriptures tell us that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God (St. John 3:16). They tell us that he is the Lamb of God (book of Revelation). They call him Counsellor, and Emmanuel, which means "God with us" (see the book of Isaiah). Jesus is the Song of Songs. He is called the Scapegoat for sin (Old Testament). The apostles revealed that he is our only peace with God. In the book of Hebrews, we learn that he is the eternal High Priest. Christ himself taught us that he is the manna of God. And the list could go on and on. The teaching that Jesus was a prophet and no more is unmasked for what it is--a lie.
