The Black Messiah of the Rastafarian Religion
Emperor Haile Selassie: The Black Messiah?
Many African American Christian churches display paintings of various versions of a Black Messiah. The reasons for the display of the paintings vary greatly, but almost all of them are rooted in the idea that Black pride must be encouraged in light of the history of oppression of this ethnic group in the United States and other nations. Also, there is the attitude of "going with the flow." If fair-skinned people are going to continue to depict Christ as Caucasian; and now the Chinese have an Asian Jesus, why not have a Black Jesus? Is there anything wrong or contrary to biblical scripture in this form of thinking? Yes, there is.
Roots in the Rastafarian Religion?
A Jamaican man named Marcus Garvey foretold that a Black Messiah would come out of Africa. In 1930, Ras (prince) Tafari ascended to the throne. He became emperor Haile Selassie, who later became known as the deliverer of all Black people. Followers of the Rastafarian religion claim belief in at least some parts of the Bible. Could this be because spread of the religion in Africa is easier if the Bible is not totally rejected?
This is especially true when speaking of Ethiopia where the Coptic church is still going strong. Many believe that the Ethiopian eunich mentioned in the New Testament book of the Acts is largely responsible for the spread of what some believe to be Christianity in Ethiopia. Followers of the Rastafarian religion might find it easier to gain at least some support for their belief in their Black messiah if they do not appear to totally reject the Christian Bible. One scripture that is used to support the prediction of Marcus Garvey is found in Old Testament book of the Psalms.
We read, "Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God" (Gideons Int'l, Psalm 68:31). African Americans who want to believe in the Black messiah of the Rastafarian religion are eager to read so much more into the scripture than what is there. Even many African Americans who are not rastafarians, but who are Christians, appear to find some spiritual connection to the members of their ethnic group who are followers of the Rastafarian religion.
A historical connection certainly exists. But, the spirituality of biblical Christianity and Rastafarianism are as different as night and day, though they appear to have similarities on the surface. According to the word of God, there is no Black messiah. Ample scripture from the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible tells us in no uncertain terms that the Messiah, Savior of the world, was born into the Jewish nation. We read, "...Jesus saith unto her, Give me drink. Then said the woman of Samaria unto him. How is it that thou, being a JEW, asketh drink of me..." (St. John 4:7,9)?
Emperor Haile Selassie may continue to be the Black messiah of followers of the Rastafarian religion. However, he will never answer to the description and the fulfillment of all of the prophecies of the true Messiah, the Son of God.
