Spanish Prepositions Made Easy
Many native English speakers who are learning the Spanish language have trouble understanding Spanish prepositions. The truth is that prepositions in almost any language are the hardest concepts to really master. Why? They seem to have no rhyme or reasons. And, sometimes they truly don't make sense.
English prepositions also tend to be very difficult to learn for native speakers of Spanish--or any language for that matter. For example, why in English do we say that someone rides ON a bus, but IN an airplane? While the native speaker of English instinctively knows to say, "on a bus," but "in a plane", the foreign speaker of English does not make such a distinction naturally. Let's now focus on Spanish prepostions. Please note that we will focus exclusively on prepositions of place. We will deal with Spanish prepostions of movement in another article.
Expressing Over and Above
Imagine there are two books on two shelves of a bookcase. One is blue, the other is red. The blue book is on a lower shelf than the red one. In other words, the blue book is on a shelf underneath the the shelf on which the red book is. Therefore all of the following are true. Note how these expressions are translated using Spanish prepositions:
1. The red book is over/above the blue book (El libro rojo está arriba del libro azul). You might also hear: El libro rojo está sobre del libro azul.
2. The blue book is below/beneath/under/underneath the red book (El libro azul está debajo del libro rojo).
Behind and In Front of
Now imagine that there are three chairs in a room: chair a, b, and c. Chair a is behind chair b; and chair c is facing chair b. See how we express this arrangement using Spanish prepositions:
1. Chair a is behind/in back of chair b (La silla a está detrás de la silla b).
2. Chair b is ahead of/in front of chair a (La silla b está delante de la silla a).
3. Chair c is opposite/facing/across from chair b (La silla c está enfrente de la silla b).
Beside, Next to, and Against
In our imagination we're now going to rearrange the chairs to continue practicing Spanish prepositions. Chairs a and b are now pushed right up next to each other in a way that, if people sit in them, they will be sitting side by side, very close to each other, probably touching arms. Chair c is separated from chairs a and b by just a small space. Here we go:
1. Chair A is against (touching) chair b (La silla a está pegada a la silla b).
2. Chair b is next to/by/beside chair c (La silla b está al lado de la silla c.
Now let's separate chairs a and b so that there are just three chairs in a row (not touching). So, we can say:
1. Chair b is between (in the middle of) chairs a and c (La silla b está entre las sillas a y c).
We can also say:
1. Chairs a and b are close to chair c (La sillas a y b están cerca de la silla c).
On, Upon, and Off
We continue our practice with Spanish prepositions by imagining a book and a table to express the following in Spanish:
1. The book is on/upon the table (El libro está encima de la mesa). Please note that just as we rarely say "upon" to express "on," you will hear, "el libro está en la mesa." Note that the book is actually touching the table, by being on it.
Now let's take the book off of the table so we can say, "The book is off the table." Using Spanish prepositions we would say, "El libro está fuera de la mesa."
In, Inside, Within, Out of, Outside of
Okay, now we have an imaginary orange and box with which we'll practice.
1. The orange is in/inside/within the box (La naranja está dentro de la caja).
2. The orange is out of/outside of the box (La naranja está fuera de la caja).
While these are not the only Spanish prepositions of place, they tend to be the most difficult to grasp. ¡Buena Suerte!
