Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Horoscope Readings: Why They Cannot Be Trusted
In the Plaza de Armas newspaper of the town of Querétaro (Mexico), appear horoscope readings by Mr. Esteban Mayo for the twelve signs of the zodiac: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. This is only one of numerous sources around the world for people to turn for advice, suggestions, and "insight" into how to direct their life.
But, can horoscope readings really be trusted? And, what light does the Christian Bible shed on the practice of relying on counsel from the stars for decision making? We have selected readings for a few of the signs of the zodiac: Leo, Aquarius, Capricorn, Scorpio, and Gemini.
The Gemini Example
The first of the horoscope readings at which we'll look is for Gemini. To the people of this sign of the zodiac, Esteban Mayo wrote, "You must give more than you expect to receive; understand instead of being understood; humble your attitude instead of being arrogant" (English translation).
The application of critical thinking when it comes to horoscope readings causes us to ask some very legitimate questions, particularly if we are believers in the word of God. If we think about it, the advice for a specific sign of the zodiac is so ambiguous and universal that it can be applied to all of the signs. The Lord Jesus said, "...It is more blessed to give than to receive" (KJV, Acts 20:35).
Christ was not giving counsel for any specific sign on any specific day. He was talking to everyone. And, the scripture of Proverbs 16:19 says, "Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud." Again, the scripture speaks to everyone, not just to people who are Gemini. Although the Lord is the maker of the celestial bodies, in no place in his word do we find horoscope readings. We find what is truth for all people, regardless of their sign of the zodiac.
The Leo Example
We move to the sign of Leo for which Esteban Mayo wrote, "Withdraw from people who require your services and your attention. Don't waste your energy on these people, because you don't need them" (English translation). This is one of the horoscope readings on which the true servant of God could not base a decision to stay away from certain people. Why?
Romans 8:14 says, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." True evangelists who are called by God to bear fruit (the winning of lost souls to Jesus), sometimes would like to dismiss all dealings with people who are most unpleasant. However, because they are led by the Spirit of God, not by horoscope readings or even their own will, they cannot always make the decision that they would prefer. Following the zodiac for decision making does not mix with the practice of biblical Christianity.
Horoscope Readings for Scorpio
We have another example that reads, "You have a positive influence on your loved ones, partners, friends, and significant other. But, you react to bouts of enthusiasm" (English translation). The biblical scripture of Ephesians 5:18 tells the believer in Jesus to, "...Be not drunk with wine...but be filled with the Spirit (of God)."
The word of God compares being drunk with wine to being filled with the Spirit of God, because both will alter a person's words and actions. Just as natural wine exerts an influence over someone, causing him or her to behave outside of his or her "normal" behavior, so does the indwelling of the Spirit of God cause a person to be moved by the Lord, not by his or her own personality. Again, we see how horoscope readings cannot mix with readings from the scriptures.
The Aquarius Example
Esteban Mayo wrote, "If you believe that the only way to be loved and admired is to unconditionally give of yourself, you will lose the respect of others and any interest they have in you now." In what way is that statement unique to the people of the Aquarius sign? Again, we see the universality of such readings.
The Capricorn Example
The people under this sign were told, "Avoid ties with people who take advantage of your tolerance. Don't judge people to be better than they are, which is how you will avoid problems." Again, in what way does this statement pertain uniquely to people who are Capricorn? Shouldn't everyone use common sense when they are making judgments of others, by remembering that actions speak louder than words, and that words often reveal what is in the heart? It is clear that sign specific horoscope readings are full of ambiguity, generalizations, and well known proverbs disguised as "psychic" advice.
Regarding judgment of others by believers in Jesus, Christ taught, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:15-16).
