What Is Kohler Bone Disease?
Kohler bone disease is a rare form of inflammation of the bones and cartilage, which is known as osteocondritis. This condition affects one of the small bones that are found in the foot (navicular bones). The condition affects children, the majority of whom are usually males between the ages of three and five.
The foot becomes inflamed and causes pain, especially on the medial side of the arch. Putting weight on the foot, and walking aggravates the discomfort. Limping is frequently seen. Kohler bone disease tends to last several months, but rarely longer than two years. Taking pain killers and keeping the child's weight at normal for his or her age and frame help to alleviate symptoms.
Wearing a cast below the knee for several weeks allows the child to walk and provides good support under the arch. This can be of significant help during the initial phases of the disease. Parents and caregivers should speak with a pediatrician for more information about this disorder to know what options they might have for treatment and pain relief. Many have turned to all natural medicines for mild pain relief and for the anti-inflammatory properties found in many herbs.
Although many have enjoyed great success in restoring their health by returning to the use of all natural medicines, laypeople are not advised to attempt to make a medical diagnosis. The symptoms of one disease can mimic those of another, thus leading to a wrong diagnosis, and delaying needed treatment. Also, a good number of people prefer to treat with all natural medicines only after they have received an official diagnosis, and even a second opinion from a medical doctor. This allows them to know what it is that needs to be treated, whether they submit to traditional medicine, resort to natural herbs, or use a combination of the two.
