When Was Satan Kicked out of Heaven?

darkSky.jpg

Many people have tried to answer the question: When was Satan kicked out of heaven? This same question comes up when discussing whether Satan and Lucifer are the same being. Heavenly Manna has answered this question (see link to article at the end of this content). However, we want to answer what sounds like another very good argument against believing that Satan and Lucifer are one and the same being, an argument we did not address in previous articles.

Satan Fell Like Lightning in Isaiah?

The scripture of Isaiah 14:12 reads, "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!" This scripture is understood to be saying that Lucifer has fallen from heaven and is no longer in heaven, and no longer can live in heaven. Now, if this is true, and Lucifer is Satan, why do we see Satan in heaven in the second chapter of Job.

The scripture of Job 2:1-2 says, "Again there was a day when the sons of God (angels) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord. And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it." The passage of Isaiah and that of Job has raised the question: When was Satan kicked out of heaven?

Attention to Detail!

When reading the Bible, failure to pay attention to detail will lead to erroneous conclusions and to massive confusion. What does Isaiah 14:12-15 say? It says, "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit."

There are two extremely important details in Isaiah 14:12-15 at which we will look. Firstly, we see that Lucifer has not yet been kicked to the pit, because the scripture says, "Thou SHALT (future tense) be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." He has only fallen from heaven; he has not been brought down to hell. Why was Lucifer kicked out of heaven? The same passage answers that question. We read, "For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God."

Notice that Lucifer said, "I WILL ascend into heaven" while he was still IN HEAVEN! The Bible clearly reveals that there is more than one heaven; there is more than one level of heaven. We read, "Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens (plural)..." (Deut. 10:14). The "heaven of heavens" is the highest of all the levels of the heavens. Ephesians 4:10 reads, "He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above ALL HEAVENS (plural)...."

The fact that Lucifer said, "I will ascend into heaven," when he was already in heaven lets us know that the part of heaven in which he lived was not the highest. Obviously, it was not the highest. This is precisely why he desired to occupy the highest heaven. The question: When was Satan kicked out of heaven, is not really the issue. The issue is lack of understanding that the Bible reveals that wickedness still resides in parts of the heavens. The fact that Lucifer, who is also Satan, fell from heaven does NOT mean that he, and the fallen angels who followed him, do not still reside in heavenly places. In fact, this is exactly what the Bible tells us!

Do we so easily forget what we read about the armor of God in the sixth chapter of Ephesians? We read, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in HIGH PLACES." The high places are the places above the earth, which are the heavens. But, let's say that that's not quite enough biblical proof to believe that there are evil spirits that still reside in the heavens.

The apostle Paul warned the Galatians when he said, "But though we, or an ANGEL FROM HEAVEN, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him (man or angel) be accursed" (Gal. 1:8).

And did not Paul warn that, "...Satan himself is transformed into an ANGEL of light" (2 Cor. 11:14). Angels come from heaven. They do not come from the pit or from hell. An angel who preaches a gospel other than the gospel of Jesus of Nazareth is an evil spirit. Nevertheless, Paul warned against listening to angels from HEAVEN who preach a different gospel. This is only a sampling of the biblical scriptures that reveal that a part of the heavens is indeed inhabited by evil spirits, including Satan, who is Lucifer, who fell from the heaven in which he lived, but who did NOT fall from the heavenly places in which he still has free roam until he is brought down to hell.

Knowing that Satan and his fallen angels still inhabit heavenly places causes us not to be confused when we read in Job 2:1-2 that he presented himself before the Lord in the heavenly places. Satan is Lucifer and Lucifer is Satan.
