Personal Protective Equipment Levels for HazMat Operations
There are four levels of personal protective equipment: A, B, C, and D.
Level A
This is the first, and the highest, of the four levels of personal protective equipment at which we'll look. A person dressed in level A looks like someone who's going to take a trip into outer space. His entire body is completely enclosed within material that is resistant to chemicals. And, he uses a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Entering an area where there are substances so deadly that the slightest contact with them will cause death requires protection to this degree. It is shameful that governments have allowed the production of substances so hazardous that these extremes must be taken to protect life.
Level B
The second of the four levels of personal protective equipment is level B. While it does not require full body encapsulation like level A, the suit is made of material that allows only minimal amounts of vapors and moisture to penetrate it. To be compliant with this level, the eyes must be protected, and a SCBA must be employed.
Level C
To meet the requirements of this one of the four levels of personal protective equipment, a nonpermeable suit must be worn. Eye protection must be used and a face mask capable of filtering the air the person will have to breath must be used. Keep in mind that a face mask that filters air is by no means the same thing as a SCBA. When a SCBA is required, never substitute with a filter.
Level D
The last of the four levels of personal protective equipment at which we'll take a look is level D. The requirements of this level are satisfied simply by wearing a suit such as a uniform suggested or provided by the employer for minimal protection.
