What Are Organophosphate Poisoning Signs and Symptoms?
The Mnemonic SLUDGE
Organophosphate poisoning signs and symptoms can be easily remembered using the mnemonic SLUDGE (Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination, Defecation, Gastric problems, Emesis). Lacrimation is tearing; and emesis is vomiting. These signs, which typically appear within eight hours of being poisoned, might be accompanied by other signs and symptoms. Those other signs include: depressed breathing, anxiety, confusion, headache, tremors, and convulsions.
Insecticides Kill More Than Insects
It is very disturbing to witness organophosphate poisoning signs and symptoms, because of the misery they reflect and because of the usual source of the poisoning--insecticides. Organophosphates are highly toxic carcinogenic (cancer causing) compounds found in many insecticide employed in homes, factories, plants, and in the cultivation of food crops. The widespread use of pesticides was encouraged as the development of genetically modified "food" was permitted and silently introduced into the market. Among such "foods" is modern wheat, which has been called a frankenfood. It is not at all like heirloom (genetically pure) varieties of wheat such as spelt and kamut.
It is no wonder that organophosphate poisoning signs and symptoms are so disturbing. Organophosphates perform much like the compounds of "nerve gas" used against soldiers in war. Exposure to these deadly substances is a direct attack upon the central nervous system.
Emergency Medical Treatment of Organic Phosphate Poisoning
If emergency medical services are called, the medics should immediately recognize classic organophosphate poisoning signs and symptoms. However, there is not a lot that can be done unless antidotes to nerve gas agents are carried on the ambulance and the medics are trained to use them. Emergency medical technicians and paramedics will be very concerned with maintaining a patent airway. The excess salivation and vomiting are a huge threat. The patient will receive supplemental oxygen, intravenous access will be attempted and a decision will be made for prompt transport to the hospital.
Organophosphate poisoning signs and symptoms are very ugly. They reflect the ugliness of their deadly use in American homes and in American agriculture.
