Do Dark Skinned Blacks Face Greater Discrimination?
Black Is Beautiful, or Is It?
Are dark skinned Blacks included in the group of African Americans that comes to mind when we hear, "Black is beautiful?" It really all depends on the personal opinion of the one who makes the statement. He or she might be referring to the African American race in general, but excluding dark skinned African Americans.
Regardless of personal opinion, it is fair to say that some dark skinned Blacks do face a form of discrimination that lighter skinned members of the race do not. Notice that anti-discrimination statements appearing on forms such as employment applications mention not only race, but color also. There is a reason for this. The mention of both attempts to provide some form of protection against discrimination based specifically upon color, regardless of race.
Dark skinned Blacks are not the only ones who face "color issues" from within their race and from without. There is a very wide variance in skin color among the people of India. Some of them are virtually fair skinned while others are very dark skinned. Since many of these people also live in the United States, there was a genuine need for the specific mention of color in the wording of anti-discrimination clauses.
Light Skinned Blacks Versus Dark Skinned Blacks
One of the saddest realities is the existence of discrimination against dark skinned African Americans perpetrated by light skinned African Americans. Unfortunately, many of the attitudes that fuel this type of twisted discrimination stem from the past when the lighter the skin was, generally the better the person fared in society.
Also, certain textures of hair and facial features tend to be "grouped." Generally, the lighter the skin is, the straighter the hair is, and the finer the facial features are. Likewise, the darker the skin is, the kinkier the hair tends to be and the "fuller" the facial features tend to be. Perhaps beauty pageants have played a negative role in forming die-hard ideas about race an color in the United States. Perhaps the events of the past have caused discrimination against dark skinned Blacks. Perhaps it is a mixture of things that has sometimes caused color to become as much of an issue as race.
Everyone is allowed to have their personal opinion of what is beautiful when it comes to physical attraction. However, when it comes to friendship and fair treatment, character content is the only thing that a "color blind" person considers.

AllPeople: While there might not be such a thing as a light skinned black person, I think the article focused on what the eyes see - someone who belongs to the black race and who has dark or light skin. All the technicalities like differences between race, nationality, and ethnicity, really don't matter, people just know what attitudes exist in American society about skin color; it's that simple. And, the fact remains that dark skinned blacks have faced some forms of discrimination that light skinned blacks have not. We don't have to complicate the issue with technicalities or with going back into the history of the passing of laws that people never heard of, etc.
