Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Most people are familiar with the story of Rosa Parks and how her simple refusal to give up her seat on a bus to a Caucasian passenger sparked the Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks went on to earn many awards, prestige, and honor, and was voted by Time magazine as one of the most influential people of the 20th century. She has been inducted into the Women's Forum Hall of Fame and a library and museum have been built in her honor. Mrs. Parks probably never thought that so much would come form her actions on December 1, 1955. Very small and seemingly insignificant actions can and do sometimes lead to history being made and large scale irreversible change, good and bad.
Such a realization causes sensible people to think twice before taking action that could cause harm especially when others are affected. It can also be encouraging because we're reminded that ordinary people can make extraordinary and positive change on a grand scale just like Rosa Parks and later, Dr. King.
While reading through the book, Our Presidents: Their Lives and Stories by Nancy Skarmeas, the information on a particular president caught my attention. To which president do I refer and how does he relate to the story of Rosa Parks or the Civil Rights Movement? The twenty-first president of the United States was Chester A. Arthur whose administration was in effect from 1881 to 1885. He certainly isn't the most famous U.S. president, but I think he deserves some of the credit for the progress this country has made in the movement for equality for all Americans.
Chester Arthur practiced law in New York before he became president in September of 1881 after President Garfield was assassinated. Although his administration doesn't stand out like that of many of the other presidents, his practice of law affected positive change for Black Americans. When speaking of the Civil Rights Movement, focus is almost exclusively placed on the institutionalized system of segregation that existed in the southern states. Although it can't be disputed that life for African Americans in the north was more "relaxed" and safer, it wasn't void of the problem of discrimination either. In fact, segregation existed in the late 1800's in the northern city of New York.
President Chester Arthur, during his practice as an attorney, defended a Black lady by the name of Lizzie Jennings. Ms. Jennings, similar to the brave Rosa Parks, filed suit against a New York street car company after she was refused a seat on a "whites only" train. Chester Arthur won Lizzie Jennings' case which directly led to the eventual desegregation of all public street cars in New York City. Could Rosa Parks have been inspired by this?
Not much is said or even known about the bravery and valuable contribution of President Chester Arthur and Lizzie Jennings. Rosa Parks and Dr. King certainly deserve recognition for their work. But, when speaking of the Civil Rights Movement, people like President Arthur and Jennings should be viewed as precursors.
Two people can take similar action in similar situations, the one may become famous, the other may not. But, each leaves his or her mark on the world. Hopefully, it's a good one like that of Rosa Parks, Dr. King, President Arthur, and Lizzie Jennings.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
