Are There Different Types of Racism?
It's All About Opinion
Even the very definition of what racism is varies from individual to individual. Therefore, the question of whether there are different types of racism is going to be based on opinion. Nevertheless, there are valid reasons why there are people of all races who believe that not all racists are the same in their prejudicial views. Why?
Hate Crimes Versus Mere Discrimination
People who harbor true hatred against a particular race are among those who have committed heinous hate crimes. It might be said that their "form" of racism is actually dangerous and threatens the lives of the members of the ethnic group/s who are the targets of their hatred. But, what about the people who, though they also hold disdain against a people based on race, are not violent? They might refuse to have dealings with members of the ethnic group that they find "distasteful," but do not resort to violence. And, what about those who actually maintain friendly dealings with ethnic groups against which they hold negative views and opinions? These people hardly ever are violent, nor do they tend to condone violence. This is why belief in various forms of racism is understandable.
Occult Racism
Whether violent or peaceful, racism is racism; and bigotry is bigotry. However, those who believe that there are different types of racism and bigotry, tend to believe that the various types cause various problems in society. Those who not only are non-violent, but who actually maintain courteous or friendly relations with other ethnic groups, might be labeled as "peaceful" racists. The very subtle disdain based on race that such people harbor against one or many ethnic groups often goes totally undetected.
They usually are not considered to "suffer" from any of the different types of racism, because of their friendly interaction with ethnic groups other than their own. These people come from all backgrounds and are found in every aspect of life. Many of them are very crafty at keeping their "racism" hidden from the public as well as from the various ethnic groups against which they hold racist views.
These people are not violent. They do not tend to have a rude or mean disposition even when dealing with the ethnic groups against which they hold racists ideas or views. Sometimes their friendly dealings with members of races other than their own is simply to demonstrate that they are NOT racist. And, depending on their job, status in society, or role in a particular organization/company, their dealings with other races might be for the purpose of making themselves look honorable.
Yes, it makes sense to believe that there are various types of racism. Some are obvious and violent. Others are subtle and barely detectable. And, still others are self-serving.
Truth Labeled Racism
Although some would agree and others would not, sometimes simply telling the truth about a particular ethnic group is quickly labeled as racism. Each person knows what's in his heart in favor of, or against a group of people based on race. However, what is in the heart cannot be kept totally hidden, because the words that are said and the words that are never said will reveal the content of the heart. Here is where the line between truth and the different types of racism lies.
The Lord Jesus taught that, "...out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh (Matthew 12:34).
