Do Spirits of Light Really Exist?
The scripture of 1 John 1:5 says, "...God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." Does this mean that spirits of light are from God? And, would those spirits be the heavenly angels, the departed spirits of the saints of God, or the spirits that just live in the natural world, which was created by the Lord?
The Holy Angels of God
It is true that the angelic beings that are still in service to the Lord abide in the light, because they abide in the presence of God, who is light. The truth that should be kept in mind when asking the question of whether spirits of light can be summoned is that angels should never ever be invoked. In the Christian Bible, which is the word of God, there is not one single scripture from the Old or New Testament that instructs man to summon angelic beings. The apostles specifically asked Christ how they should pray. Jesus answered them saying, "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven..." (Mat. 6:9).
The Savior taught us that we are to address prayer to the Father. He did not tell us to pray to angels, to his mother Mary, to deceased saints, to spirits of light, or to anyone else except the Father. Believers make prayer requests in the name of Jesus (St. John 15:23), but those requests are still directed to the Father per Jesus' instructions.
There are no spirits of light who should be summoned for peace, love, or joy. Those things are the fruit of the Holy Ghost, who is one of the three persons of the holy Trinity. We read, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance..." (Gal. 5:22-23).
It is not rituals, chants, potions, precious stones, aromatherapy, "blessed" jewelry, or anything else that summons the Holy Spirit. He cannot be summoned like the spirits who operate in the kingdom of darkness. The Spirit of God comes to us only when we place our faith in the Son of God, Christ Jesus. True faith is obedience. Also, let's not forget that the Bible warns us that what is evil can appear as light. We read, "...Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness..." (2 Cor. 11:14-15).
