Moving to Iowa? A Look at Life in the Midwest
Are you moving to Iowa and wondering what life in the Midwest will be like? Everyday many people, for a variety of reasons, find themselves being forced to make a decision regarding where they'll live. Some are young people preparing to go to college, others have lost their employment and must seek better opportunities. There are those of the mature population who are considering a change of residence in choosing where they'll spend their retirement. Each person will likely realize that disadvantages as well as advantages should be evaluated before moving. Of course, what is an advantage to one person may be a disadvantage to someone else due to the varied scenarios that exist when it comes to personal interests.
Could the state of Iowa possibly be one of the places to which someone may want to consider relocating? What advantages could life in the Midwest offer? What might be some of the disadvantages to moving to Iowa? Answering these questions requires focusing in on specific areas of interest.
Moving to Iowa for Safety?
The days of not locking one's doors at night time or when leaving home are gone even in many of America's small towns. Life in the Midwest is no exception. The small and once safe town of Waterloo has recently been hit with a series of shootings that broke out after verbal disputes. Children as young as 7 roam the streets with teenaged members of gangs until well passed midnight during the Spring, Summer, Fall, and good days in Winter. The city of Des Moines is indisputably more dangerous when it comes to violent crime usually perpetrated by gang members. Nevertheless, life in the Midwest towns of Iowa are said to be relatively safe. This isn't because they are safe, but because when, compared to the violence taking place in many other major cities, it's a state that ranks safer. It should be understood that almost every town and city has relatively serene neighborhoods, but if one can't afford to live in them, he may not be able to survive in that particular city. This is not of concern to the affluent who are moving to Iowa.
Relocating to Iowa for Job Opportunities?
It's absolutely true that Iowa is a farmer's state where acres of corn fields will be the only view when traveling most of the highways and freeways. There are also many hog farmers in the state. It should come of no surprise that good paying jobs in practically any field are extremely scarce. Des Moines and Cedar Rapids are the two cities to which most Iowans who will not give up life in the Midwest flock when in search of employment. Fortunately, the cost of living is considerably lower than in the major cities, but so are the wages.
Moving to Iowas to Get an Education?
Iowa is home to some of the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities. The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City. Drake University is situated in Des Moines and the University of Northern Iowa which is world renowned for the study of Accounting has its main campus in the twin cities of Waterloo/Cedar Falls.
Two of the best two-year schools in the state: Kirkwood Community College and Ellsworth Community College are located in Cedar Rapids and Iowa Falls respectively. Those who are interested in studying at Kirkwood may want to consider living in Cedar Rapids. The college offers many courses online, however, customer service by phone leaves much to be desired. It is best to go ahead and leave a message and/or communicate by email during times of class registration.
Diversity Among Iowans
Few people would consider moving to Iowa for diversity. Nevertheless, it's a topic that should be brought up because, it helps to paint a picture of life in the Midwest. Iowa is composed predominantly of very small towns populated by residents with little or no direct exposure to people who are not from Iowa or the Midwest. Therefore, people from other parts of the country and certainly from other nations may encounter what they might label as extreme narrow-mindedness and an inability to deal with people of a very different background. Racial diversity is fairly "good" in Des Moines, "not so good" in smaller towns, and absent in the very small towns such as Vinton, Hudson, and Gilbertville. The town of Evansdale is changing dramatically in this respect. However, the serene life of the town is slipping away.
There's some diversity in religious beliefs, but not much. Most of Iowa has a very strong Catholic background; and the congregation of many of the churches of other denominations is mostly composed of former Catholics. Consequently, worship service in many Protestant churches resemble mass in some respects. Most Catholics who are considering moving to Iowa will be very pleased with the choice of churches. That does not mean, however, that other faiths are not represented. There are a number of churches for people who are: Lutheran, Methodist, Jehovah's Witness, Latter Day Saints, Baptist, Pentecostal, Evangelical, etc. Churches of these denominations might not exist in the very small towns. Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Des Moines have the greatest religious diversity.
Relocating to Iowa for Friendliness? You Won't Find It
As stated earlier, Iowa is a very conservative state with regard to ideas and opinions of others. That's simply a part of life in most parts of the Midwest. Therefore, two visitors, depending on where they come from, and what town they visit, may have very different experiences from pleasant to very unpleasant.
Although most Iowans are not necessarily rude, to say that the atmosphere is friendly would be an over-statement. Visitors should not expect to be greeted by others they pass on the streets or to strike up conversation while shopping. Of course some Iowans are very friendly, but friendliness certainly is not what the state is known for.

I was thinking about moving to the Midwest from Miami. In Miami I'm constantly around drugs, violence & corruption. The people are generally rude & I was hoping to move somewhere more peaceful. But after reading your article, I think the small Midwest cities are just as bad as Miami. Now I'm thinking of moving out of America! Lol

To Amy:
If you are living where there are drugs and violence in Miami, it is probably safe to say that you will find it much safer in Iowa, except for some neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Des Moines. Surely, Florida has smaller towns that are safer than some of the dangerous areas of Miami. We mention this because you might find it difficult to adjust to the extreme cold in winter. West Des Moines, Waterloo, and Cedar Falls are Iowa towns that are experiencing quite a bit of growth as there are more job opportunities than there were a few years back.
