Can Ethnic Genetic Diseases Cross Ethnic Lines?
Ethnic genetic diseases, in the mind of some people, are limited to affecting only certain ethnic groups, depending on the specific disease. For example, many people believe that African Americans and people of black African descent are the only ones who can suffer from sickle cell anemia. Likewise, many believe that Caucasians are the only people who can suffer from cystic fibrosis.
The Truth About Ethnic Genetic Diseases
According to The Merck Manual of Medical Information (Second Edition), "Cystic fibrosis is the most common inherited disease among White people in the United States. It occurs in about 1 of 3,300 White infants...." Sadly, those statistics reflect quite a large number of Caucasians suffering from a disease that shortens a person's life span, and that can cause great misery.
Unfortunately, people tend to focus on the norm while totally forgetting that there are almost always exceptions to every "rule." Exceptions or rare cases exists in the area of ethnic genetic diseases. The Merck Manual goes on to say that cystic fibrosis occurs in "1 of 15,300 Black infants." This means that contrary to popular belief, African Americans can suffer from cystic fibrosis. What about Asians? Can they also have this disease? Yes, they can. It is a rare occurrence among Asians, but they can suffer from cystic fibrosis.
Can Europeans Suffer from Sickle Cell Disease?
Advanced Emergency: Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, edited by Andrew N. Pollak, MD, FAAOS, is the current (2012) text book for advanced emergency medical technician (AEMT) training. It sheds important light on the questions surrounding ethnic genetic diseases. AEMTs across the United States study from this book in preparation for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam. Although the authors hold to the ridiculous theory of evolution, the teachings on anatomy and physiology are very valuable for AEMT training.
In this text book we read that sickle cell disease, "Primarily affects African American, Puerto Rican, and EUROPEAN populations" (p. 681). Although Blacks outnumber the sufferers of sickle cell disease, they certainly are not the only ethnic group who can be afflicted with it. It might not be very surprising that Puerto Ricans can have sickle cell disease, considering that many Puerto Ricans have African ancestry. However, few people are aware that Europeans can suffer from this disease that, like cystic fibrosis, can cause much suffering and shorten a person's life.
Discussion of ethnic genetic diseases can also give rise to the question of whether there are diseases that affect one gender more than the other. Yes, there are. For example, hemophilia, a genetic bleeding disorder, tends to affect males much more than it does females. Again, it's good to keep in mind that "predominantly" and "generally" and similar words denoting the usual, do not exclude the possible.
Females can suffer from hemophilia. Europeans can suffer from sickle cell disease. African Americans and black Africans can suffer from cystic fibrosis. Asians can suffer from cystic fibrosis. These facts about ethnic genetic diseases should be of particular concern to health care providers who are expected to provide the highest quality of care to their patients.

The word of God teaches us that God, "...Hath made of ONE BLOOD all nations of men..." (KJV, Acts 17:26).
