What Should You Know As a Patient About Starting an IV?
Intravenous (IV) therapy requires some cleaning of the site to prevent the introduction of harmful microbes into the system of the patient. Therefore, before starting an IV, the health care provider should properly cleanse the site. A site might be the patient's hand, in what is known as the antecubital (inside bend of the elbow), or another site. The hand is the most frequently chosen site.
The area should be cleansed using an aseptic technique. Isopropyl alcohol may be used, though there are other substances now being used to cleanse before starting an IV. We'll speak of using an alcohol pad for this article. Proper cleansing involves using an alcohol pad to cleanse in a circular motion from the inside, working out. A SECOND alcohol pad should be used to cleanse by wiping straight down in the very same area in order to kill microbes. The health care provider should also be applying a little pressure as he or she cleanses.
How many times does proper cleansing take place before starting an IV? Very few health care providers will take the time to use two alcohol pads to cleanse the area. And making one or two light sweeps with an alcohol pad across the area before piercing the vein is totally unacceptable unless the situation is a dire emergency. This behavior is almost always a reflection of laziness to cleanse in the proper manner. Even if two alcohol pads are not used before starting an IV, at least one should be used to cleanse in a circular motion and then in an up and down motion before puncturing the patient's vein.
