Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Some years ago a young lady was looking for a home church which sparked conversations with various pastors and co-pastors. I still remember some of those conversations very well due to the impressions with which they left her.
One particular conversation she had touched on water baptism. As she conversed with the pastor, she asked if his church performed water baptism. She asked how often baptism was performed and if the church owned its own pool or used a public pool, or if they went to the river. She found the conversation educational as she learned that the church practiced baptism that consisted of the sprinkling of water and not immersion. He went on to explain that such a decision had not been made based on scripture, but rather had been reached based on what was convenient. He stated that he sure didn't want to deal with the inconvenience of getting all of his clothes wet for a water baptism by immersion.
The question is not about how each church chooses to perfom water baptism, but rather about the reason behind one church's decision to concern themselves only with convenience. It is understandable why many don't take Christians seriously. It also is most difficult to imagine Chrisitans taking up their cross to bear it when they won't even inconvenience themselves for a little while in order to please God.
In some churches it has become popular for a preacher or teacher to say, "thank God for Jesus" during worship service or Bible study. It's probably more appropriate to thank God that Jesus didn't see it too inconvenient to be betrayed, arrested, mocked, beaten, and crucified that we might be saved and inherit eternal life. Some Christian churches still believe in and practice water baptism by immersion. When searching for a church home, this is just one of many questions that should be asked before deciding to become a member.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
