The Rock of Salvation Ordained Saint Peter the First Pope?
Interpreting the Biblical Scripture
The scripture of Matthew 16:18 reads that Jesus said to the apostle Peter, who some people called Saint Peter, "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Some people believe and teach that this scripture means that Jesus himself named Peter the first pope of the church. There is, however, a very serious problem with such an interpretation of Matthew 16:18. It requires that the words "this rock" refer to the apostle Peter, which leads to another problem--Peter, not Christ, would then be the Rock of salvation.
The Temple of the Rock of Salvation
Should the words "this rock" be assigned to Peter? Is it logical to think that Christ would refer to himself as "this rock" instead of saying something like, "Upon myself I will build my church?" Scripture from the Christian Bible provides clear answers to these questions. The biblical passage of St. John 2:18-21 reads:
"Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy THIS TEMPLE, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of HIS BODY."
It is clear in the scripture of St. John 2:18-21 that Christ referred to his own body as "this temple." Then why is it said that he refers to anyone but himself as "this rock" in Matthew 16:18? It might be argued that the scripture of St. John 2:18-21 plainly explains that "this temple" refers to the body of Jesus, but that no such clarity is present in Matthew 16:18. Therefore "upon this rock I will build my church" might refer to the apostle Peter and his ordination as the first pope.
The Christian Bible on the Identity of the Rock of Salvation
Numerous scriptures from the Old and New Testaments make it clear who the Rock of Salvation is: He is the Lord himself. The following scriptures are among those that reveal this truth:
"And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer" (2 Samuel 22:2).
"Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my rock..."(Psalm 28:1).
"And did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4).
Jesus referred to himself as "this rock" in Matthew 16:18 just as he used the words "this temple" to speak of himself in St. John 2:18-2. This is
because he, not the apostle Peter, is the Rock of salvation. This also means that Matthew 16:18 fails to support the belief that the Rock of salvation named the apostle Peter the first pope.
