Voodoo Doll Curses in Light of Biblical Scripture
Are Voodoo Doll Curses Real?
Despite the rejection of skeptics of the power of black magic used in practices such as voodoo doll curses, many people believe in the reality of evil supernatural power. A good number of those same people almost always hold a fear of being cursed by real-life magicians who use black magic as an invisible weapon. Such fear often is based upon the knowledge of real cases of black magic. Sometimes personal experience with curses drives fear.
Biblical Light on the Subject
When we think of the making of a doll in someone's image with the intention of using it to harm that individual, many scriptures quickly reveal sin in this. In Exodus 20:4, we read that the Lord said, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."
Are not voodoo dolls an image of what is in the earth--the image of a man? Yes, they are; and they are man-made for man's evil intentions--to harm individuals. Some will argue that voodoo dolls are not graven images or worshiped as idols. The scripture reveals that God said not to even make the image or likeness of things in the earth, period. It is in the next verse in which we read that Israel was told not to bow down to images. So, there are two commands. One prohibits bowing to images; the other prohibits man from even making them for his own purposes, whether he ever bows to them or not. The images that Israel made for the tabernacle were specifically ordered by the Lord for HIS purposes. So, there is no justification in scripture for the evil practice of voodoo doll curses.
"There shall not be found among you any one that...(is) an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord..." (Deut. 18:10-12).
The Goal of Voodoo Doll Curses
Images of sticking pins in voodoo dolls are not simply a figment of someone's imagination or something that is only in the movies. Dolls made in the image of someone with the intention of causing them physical and mental harm are a real part of voodoo doll curses. Other aspects of black magic are employed to send illness, misfortune, and "bad luck" to victims to cause fear, injury, torment, and sometimes death. Those who are obedient to the doctrine of Christ do not practice or support the practice of using unholy power to harm others, even if those other people are enemies who "deserve" to be paid back. That amounts to vengeance, which belongs exclusively to God (Rom. 12:19).
Jesus said to his disciples, "...Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves" (Mat. 10:16). This does not mean that Christians are suppossed to be "door mats." At the same time, no one who casts voodoo doll curses is a servant of Christ.
Plagued by a Curse?
Sadly, many Christian churches completely avoid questions about the paranormal. To make matters worse, many preach that Christians should not have any fear of things such as voodoo doll curses, because God's power is supreme. God's power is supreme (Ephes. 1:20-21). And, it is absolutely true that believers in Jesus should not fear evil. Nevertheless, the fact remains that many do.
These brethren in the Lord should not be ignored or scolded without even knowing why they fear. Many have personal experiences with black magic that need to be dealt with in the power of God's word and with understanding. In fact, many Christian "leaders" have no biblical answers for the mysterious things that have happened to them. Christians, particularly those who will share the gospel of Jesus in places where voodoo doll curses are practiced, would do well to learn what God's word really says about curses.
