Did Jesus Practice Christian Exorcism?
What Is Christian Exorcism?
The definition of what Christian exorcism is can vary greatly depending on who is defining the term. In a nutshell, however, it generally is defined as the exorcism, or casting out of demons and devils that we see Christ performing throughout the four Gospels. It also is said that Christian exorcism is seen in the book of the Acts of the apostles, who were very close followers of the doctrine of Christ.
The scripture of Mark 16:17 records the words of the Lord Jesus who said, "And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils...." We also read that Christ taught his followers saying, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." (KJV, St. John 14:12-14).
What some believe to be Christian exorcism and ghost hunting and busting is based on these and other scriptures from the Bible. Sometimes exorcism prayer is based on other writings considered to be sacred.
Demon Busters and Workers of Signs, Wonders, and Miracles
We read that Jesus spoke of his disciples casting out devils in his name (Mark 16:17). He also spoke of granting the things that his servants ask in his name and of his followers doing the works that he did (St. John 14:12-14). Consequently, is it safe to say that any and everyone who casts out devils, and works signs and wonders in the name of Jesus is a true follower of Christ? Is such a person practicing true Christian exorcism?
Let us remember what else we read that Jesus said, because it is directly related to questioning Christian exorcism. Jesus warned, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me, ye that work iniquity" (Matthew 7:21-23).
The people whom Jesus never knew said that they had cast out devils in his name, which is what many call Christian exorcism. Others spoke of doing wonderful works in his name. Nevertheless, Christ said he did not know them. He also told these people that they worked iniquity. What had went so terribly wrong that these people who had carried out Christian exorcism and mighty works in the name of Jesus were declared workers of iniquity?
One of the scriptures in which we find our answer is Matthew 24:24. Jesus warned, "For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."
Christian exorcism and miraculous signs and wonders can be performed in the name of a false Christ! This is exactly what the Lord taught. It is of utmost importance to understand who Jesus of Nazareth, the Lamb of God is, because of the danger of serving a false Jesus. We are told that, "Wisdom is the principle thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting, GET UNDERSTANDING" (Proverbs 4:7).
Questions about the true Son of God, exorcism prayer, ghost hunting and busting, quranic healing, or the acts of self-proclaimed demon busters are answered in the word of God. Get understanding for yourself instead of waiting to be taught these things in the average Bible study, sermon, or Sunday school lesson. These topics are hardly ever taught, which has led to much confusion and much deception.
