The Two Types of Partial Seizures
The two types of partial seizures are simple partial and complex partial. Unlike generalized seizures, partial seizures involve a limited portion of the brain in which neurons (nerve cells) fire suddenly and erratically. Although they involve a limited area of the brain, they can still be as alarming as generalized convulsions, because they can spread to other parts of the brain. If this happens, the partial seizure can develop into a generalized one.
Simple Partial Seizures
A simple partial seizure involves convulsive activity in one part of the body. This is the one of the two types of partial seizures that can progress to a generalized convulsion, formerly known as a grand mal seizure. The person does not generally lose consciousness or experience an aura. An aura is a strange sensation that the person might get prior to the seizure. Hearing high pitched sounds, seeing lights, and the sudden development of an odd taste in the mouth are examples of an aura.
Complex Partial Seizures
The other of the two types of partial seizures is the complex one. Its characteristics are very different from the simple partial seizures. The mood of the person changes and he or she might become combative. An aura usually precedes the complex partial seizure, which tends to last from less than one minute to a couple of minutes. A rapid and complete return to normal mental status follows the event.
This is the one of the two types of partial seizures for which a diagnosis might be delayed due to unfamiliarity with the various types of neurological disorders. Other signs of this type of health problem include confusion, inability to speak, strange movements of the eyes and head, and even hallucinations.
Medical Intervention
If there is any reason to suspect that someone might be suffering from either of the two types of partial seizures, a medical doctor should be consulted. There are various medical causes of seizures. However, sometimes a cause cannot be determined despites extensive medical testing. Epileptic seizures normally are well managed (prevented from occurring) with faithful taking of prescription medications such as Lamictal, Dilantin, Tegretal, and Neurontin.
