Trichophagia Symptoms, Treatment and Causes

Trichophagia Symptoms and Signs
What is trichophagia? "Trich" means hair and "phagia" means to eat or to swallow. Trichophagia translates to the bizarre desire and act of eating or swallowing hair. Sometimes the term also is used loosely used to refer to the eating of substances other than hair that are not food. Simply put, trichophagia symptoms and signs include, but are not limited to:
1. Chewing on and eating hair
2. The formation of a hair ball, known as a trichobezoar, in the gastrointestinal tract
3. Indigestion
4. Stomach pain
Sufferers of trichophagia might be seen nibbling or chewing on hair that is still in their scalp. They might also be found eating hair obtained from their brush or comb, or from the brush or comb of other people. However strange these trichophagia symptoms and signs might sound, they are real--and so is the threat to the health of the sufferers.
An Introduction to Trichophagia Treatment
A trichobezoar, or hair ball in the gastrointestinal tract leads to life-threatening health problems such as an obstruction of the bowel, if left unattended. What treatments might be prescribed when trichophagia symptoms and signs are present? Drug therapy to help control the health-destroying behavior almost always accompanies some type of mental health care; and it is believed that treatment can enable patients to lead a normal life. But, is the absence of trichophagia symptoms and signs the evidence of the leading of a normal life? Some people answer that question in the affirmative while others answer it in the negative. Is it really normal to have to rely on medication in order to abstain from eating hair? Has the problem been solved or just suppressed?
A Secular and Christian Look at Trichophagia Causes
According to the medical world, trichophagia causes are unknown. However, it is suspected that the disorder might be the result of some type of trauma and/or conflict whether conscious or unconscious. Does the Christian Bible shed any light on trichophagia symptoms and signs, treatment and causes?
The word of God teaches that trauma, particularly from violence and abuse, leads to spiritual and mental disorders to varying degrees. Jesus said of himself, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised" (KJV, Luke 4:18).
Jesus speaks of setting the bruised at liberty. "Bruised" refers to being downtrodden, held captive, and oppressed. Those who are free have no need to be "set at liberty." The bruised are oppressed; and where there is oppression, there are oppressors. Oppression can be physical such as the slavery that Israel endured in Egypt (Exodus 3:9); and it can be spiritual. The scripture of Acts 10:38 reads, "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good, and HEALING all that were oppressed of the devil...."
The devil is a spirit, and he is an oppressor who oppresses others physically through evils such as slavery and injustice. He also oppresses mentally and spiritual through demonic oppression and possession. Throughout the scriptures, Jesus is seen casting evil spirits out of people, enabling them to truly lead a normal life, and healing them from the physical and spiritual bruising caused by demonic oppression and/or possession. The truth is that oppression, whether physical or spiritual, involves violence and abuse. This is why the oppressed are bruised and in need not only of being set at liberty, but also of being healed. The scripture of Acts 10:38 speaks of the HEALING of the bruised. Healing is only needed where harm has been done. This means that violence and abuse results in physical and spiritual bruising.
Being healed from abuse and liberated from oppression is far superior to merely having harm covered and oppression tolerated. Trichophagia symptoms and signs generally can be controlled and covered over with man's drugs. But, the victim still is not truly free--at least not spiritually, if he or she must rely on drugs to stop eating hair. Jesus came not only to set at liberty, but to heal the physical, mental, and spiritual bruising of those who have suffered violence and abuse. He does the same for those who are plagued with conflict--if the individual will truly turn to him.
Trichophagia symptoms and signs reflect the devastation of a very bizarre, abnormal, and mysterious behavior that does not occur for no reason at all. That behavior reflects the characteristics of a vicious oppressor whose work produces actual physical signs and symptoms in the midst of mental and spiritual harm and bruising. Trichophagia steals one's health; it destroys one's health; and if left unattended, it will kill. Christ warned, "The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy..." (St. John 10:10). He also said, "...I am come that they might have life..." (St. John 10:10).
