Scripture of The Day - 1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit - Part III
This is a continuation (part III) of Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit - Part II. Please read parts I and II in order to benefit from this three part introduction to the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.
In the first part of the Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit, we were introduced to love and joy. In the second part, we were introduced to the meaning of the fruit: peace, longsuffering, gentleness, and goodness. Finally, we take a look at faith, meekness, and temperance in this third and final part.
Faith
This is another of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit that is misunderstood by many people, including Christian believers. To simply believe that Jesus exists is not the same thing as having faith in him. True faith in the Lord compels obedience to him. This is not speculation or opinion; this is according to scripture.
We read, "But they have not all OBEYED the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath BELIEVED our report? Watchman Nee did a fantastic job of teaching the truth that faith equals obedience and that obedience is worked by faith when he pointed out that those who believed the report were the same as those who obeyed it. They believed, so they obeyed. They obeyed because they truly believed. As long as Adam and Eve believed God's word that told them that they would die if they ate from the forbidden tree in the
garden of Eden, they obeyed. As soon as the serpent convinced Eve that God's word was not true, they ate in disobedience. Remember, this one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit is also one of the weapons of God--the shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16)
Meekness
This is one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit that is also very deficient in the average church in the West. Someone once jokingly said that there are many people who are so proud of how humble they are! Humble words do not make one humble. Each person knows if he or she is haughty in spirit and attitude--and so do others, despite "meek" words that are said.
Temperance
We arrive at the end of the list of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--temperance. The Living Bible Paraphrased uses the word "self-control" for the word "temperance," which is a good word choice. The scripture of James 1:19 says, "Wherefore my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, SLOW TO WRATH." People who do not have self-control cannot be expected to be slow to wrath.
The apostle Paul is seen in scripture speaking of the real-life practice of this one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit when he wrote, "But, I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway" (1 Corinthians 27). Having the "can't help its" or claiming, "the devil made me do it," is not exercising the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
