Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit - Part I
What Are the Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit?
The nine fruits of the Holy Spirit really should be called the fruit (singular) of the Spirit, because all nine work together as one. This is why scripture of the Christian Bible says "fruit of the Spirit," not "fruits." However, for the purpose of this article, we will refer to the fruit of Spirit as the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. What are they? Scripture tells us that, "...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law" (KJV, Galatians 5:22-23).
Just as scripture identified the fruit of the Spirit, let's see what it says about each one of them. We not only learn the specifics of each, we also are prompted to do a self-evaluation in light of the word of God. Finally, readers who do not fully understand what it means to be
baptized in the Holy Spirit are encouraged to seek such a precious and needed gift from the Lord. We now take a look at each of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Love
It probably is not by coincidence that love, also called "charity" in the Christian Bible, heads the list of the fruit of the Spirit in the scripture of Galatians 5:22-23. The very first and greatest commandment of God is to love the Lord God with all of one's heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:29-30). It is followed by the second greatest command to love one's neighbor as oneself (Mark 12:31). Jesus said, "There is none other commandment greater than these" (verse 31). Genuine love of God compels obedience, which is why it is the bond of perfection (Colossians 3:14). Many people think that to be perfect in God's eyes is to never sin. However, scripture from the word of God says that to be perfect in God's eyes is to be perfect in love for God, one's neighbor, and even for one's enemies (Colossians 3:14, Matthew 5:44-48). Being perfect in love for God produces an almost sin-free life. So, emphasis should be on loving God, which itself will free us from sin. Complete surrender to the indwelling Holy Spirit produces this kind of love that is not possible outside of God.
Joy
Joy is one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit, because though genuine Christians suffer tribulation and depression, they are not stripped of joy when the Spirit of God lives in them. Few believers in the West can honestly say that they know what it means to have joy in the midst of great trials of faith. However, many people of the body of Christ living in nations where the gospel is restricted and where they are persecuted and martyred for their faith, know of such a joy. The apostles Paul and Peter both knew such a joy.
Peter wrote, "...Jesus Christ, whom having not seen, ye love, in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory" (1 Peter 1:7-8).
