The Power of Intercessory Prayer - Part II
This is a continuation of The Power of Intercessory Prayer - Part I Reading of part I is strongly recommended to fully benefit from part II.
Commanded to Pray Intercessory Prayer?
It might be argued that Job was instructed by God to intercede for his friends and that such a fact teaches us that we don't need to plead for others if we haven't been given divine instructions to do so. On the contrary, the Christian believer has been given instructions and a direct command by God to intercede for others. The scripture of 1 Timothy 2:1-4 reads, "I exhort therefore that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men: for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth."
The scripture is not telling us to pray, "God bless everybody in the world to be saved," because some people people have made up their mind never to come to God and God will not hear prayer for them. Remember that God discouraged Samuel from continuing to pray for the willfully disobedient king Saul (1 Samuel 16:1). And God told Jeremiah, "Therefore pray NOT thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me for I will not hear thee" (Jeremiah 7:16).
The Christian is to rely on the moving of the
Holy Spirit to know the will of God in making prayers and intercession for people. What we are to keep in mind is that if God wanted to intervene in the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to avoid destroying the souls in them, how much more does he want to intervene into the affairs of the suffering people of the world who cannot call on him for various reasons. The suffering might be people who've never heard the gospel, so they don't know to call on God. They might be babies and children or mentally disabled and unable to lift up the prayers that need to be made for them. They might even be Christian believers who have become so weary of tribulation that they are temporarily without strength. This is why we read, "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered" (Romans 8:26).
Made Priests of God
The power of intercessory prayer is for the "sub" priests of God. Remember, God, through his Son Jesus, has made Christian believers to be priests (Revelation 5:10). A priest makes intercession and we are to be like our great High Priest who is always interceding for the saints (Hebrews 4:14-15). The power of intercessory prayer is the power, through Christ, to effect change in the life of the wretch and in the lives of those who suffer horrific treatment in this world. Use and witness the power of intercessory prayer--
prayer for God to intervene into horrific situations and suffering for which often there truly is no hope without God's direct intervention.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
