Jesus Christ High Priest
The Son of God is Jesus Christ High Priest
In the natural world, or at least in some nations such as the United States, if someone is accused of a crime, he retains an attorney or one is appointed to him if he cannot afford to pay for himself. This is to provide him with defense in the face of accusation and possible conviction which, depending on the crime, could mean the death penalty. Understandably, lawyers require that their clients be truthful with them--if the lawyer himself believes in morals based on the Christian Bible. He cannot present a full defense without the one whom he's defending coming clean or confessing.
Jesus Christ High Priest can be very loosely compared to an attorney because he pleads our cause before the Father whether we are receiving salvation for the first time or in need of forgiveness for a sin committed as a servant of God. God the Father should not be viewed as an uncaring judge who is so distant that we have to have Jesus Christ High Priest to persuade him to forgive us. On the contrary, never forget that the Father is the one who gave his Son to be
sacrificed at Calvary so that sinful man would have the greatest spiritual attorney he can have--a holy "lawyer" who never looses a case. Unlike the mortal lawyer, however, Jesus does not defend sin. We must come clean by confessing in true repentance, asking, and receiving forgiveness and cleansing. We read, "IF we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us" (1 John 1:9-10). If the word of Jesus Christ High Priest is not in us, we have no defense, and we have no real fellowship with him.
If, however, we "come clean" with the Savior, he will make intercession for us with the Father like no one else can, because it is his own shed blood that cleanses us from sin and unrighteousness. Jesus Christ High Priest understands like no other because every affliction that can be experienced was endured by him who overcame. Even the awkward prayers and the ones that can barely be made because of the turmoil that one might be experiencing, are heard if they are made in sincere repentance and a desire to be forgiven. This is why it's vitally important to resist the enemy when he attempts to keep you away from running to Jesus Christ High Priest for forgiveness, strength, help, cleansing, and restoration.
Scripture from the Christian Bible tells the believer, "Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession (of faith). For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:14-16).
"Wherefore he (Jesus Christ High Priest) is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became (was fitting for) us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; who needeth not daily, as those high priest, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's, for this he did once, when he offered up himself (at Calvary)" (Hebrews 7:25-27).
Jesus as High Priest does not serve to forgive
willful, habitual sin (Hebrews 10:26). He serves to forgive sin committed in ignorance and genuine weakness and sin for which the individual is truly sorry, causing the individual to confess before God and ask him for
forgiveness, cleansing and strength to overcome repeating that sin.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
