The Bible on Cross Dressing
Ample scripture from the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible on the topic of homosexuality has been made freely available to most everyone in the West. However, while being gay or bisexual might be considered related to cross dressing, not all homosexuals are cross dressers. What do we learn from studying the Bible on cross dressing?
Male Cross Dressers Mentioned in Scripture?
The scripture of 1 Corinthians 6:9 reads, "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind." The definition of "effeminate" is: marked by qualities more typical of and suitable to women than men, unmanly (The Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Of course it could be said that a man who impersonates a woman is effeminate.
Impersonating a woman almost always involves dressing like one as well as imitating "feminine" behavior. Are the scriptures saying that it is so terrible for male cross dressers to behave like women that they will not inherit the kingdom of God simply because they are cross dressers and/or act feminine? Are the scriptures saying that cross dressers should be viewed as homosexuals? And what about women who have what would be considered masculine behavior? These are all legitimate questions that can be raised when 1 Corinthians 6:9 is read or even when mentioning the Bible on cross dressing.
Speaking strictly, for a moment, of homosexual men, it's a fact that not all are cross dressers. However, is it inaccurate to say that cross dressers are treading on homosexual territory whether they actually live as a gay individual or not? If that question is answered in the affirmative, on what scripture is that answer based? The scripture of Matthew 5:28 records when Jesus warned, "But I say unto you that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." The Lord reminds that adultery is adultery even while still only in the thoughts. Are thoughts of homosexuality or mere thoughts of other sin viewed by God as the sin already committed? What does God's word say? It instructs man to bring EVERY thought into obedience to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). It does not dwell only on adultery or any other specific sin; it says "every thought." When considering the Bible on cross dressing, or male cross dressers in particular, these truths cannot be dismissed.
Not only is homosexuality an abomination to the Lord, according to biblical scripture, an effeminate man is offensive to God. Again, does this mean that it's okay with God for women to embrace masculinity, but not for men to embrace femininity? One truth, though it is understandably disturbing to some men, including heterosexuals, is the fact that many societies are accepting of masculine women, while those same societies reject feminine men.
Females can wear slacks, including slacks for men, but males should not wear skirts and dresses. For many years, it wasn't very acceptable for adult males to wear pink, but females of all ages could wear blue. Boys who like playing with baby dolls are still widely considered abnormal and sissy, while girls can wrestle and play ball, and remain "normal" tom boys. Straight men can have buddies, but not boyfriends, but women can have buddies or girlfriends. What things influenced the development of such attitudes?
It should not be forgotten that the apostle Paul reminds, "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man" (1 Corinthians 11:7-9).
Many men have used, or it should be said, misused this and other biblical scripture to oppress women. Such a message is not being put forth in this article nor is held by HeavenlyManna.net. Nevertheless, people and things of the natural world are reflections of things that have been established in the spiritual world (1 Corinthians 11:10).
