Are There Heretic Teachings in the Christian Church?
Just as all that glitters is not gold, not all who profess to be Christian teachers of the Bible are adherents to the doctrine of Christ. In fact, a good number of them preach heretic teachings directly from the pulpit. Some people will argue that what one person labels as sound doctrine is a heresy to another because of differing interpretations of the Bible. The fact is that God's word clearly speaks of heretic teachings in the church. It also speaks of sound doctrine in the Christian church. This means that the word of God is saying that one exists just as much as the other. God-given common sense lets us know that teachings cannot be sound doctrine and heresies at the same time. This is why the illogical argument that there are various CORRECT interpretations of the Bible fail miserably when actual scripture is brought to light.
The Definition of Heresy
A basic definition of heresy is: adherence to an opinion or doctrine that is contrary to dogma of the church. Sound doctrine is teaching that agrees with the truth, which Jesus said is God's word (St. John 17:17, 2 Timothy 4:2-3). While there are various heretic teachings that can be mentioned, some of them stray so far from biblical truth that the apostle Peter referred to them as "damnable heresies," as we shall shortly see.
Denial of Christ
"But there were false prophets also among the people even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies even denying the Lord that bought them..." (2 Peter 2:1).
Peter mentions one of the most dangerous of the heretic teachings of some "Christian" churches--the denial of the Son of God, Christ. What is denial of Jesus? Did not the apostle Peter himself deny Jesus? Biblical scripture says that Peter denied he knew Jesus. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Peter denied who Jesus is; he denied knowing him, and having kept company with him (Matthew 26:69-72), but he did not deny who Christ is. The denial of the Savior by false teachers of which Peter spoke later in 2 Peter 2:1 is a heresy, because this type of denial involves rejection of who Jesus is--the Christ of God.
The impact of this type of denial can't be fully comprehended without first getting understanding of who Christ is. Nevertheless, even before such knowledge is gained, it's not difficult to see that something is very wrong with denying the truth that Jesus is the Christ of God. We are warned, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist..." (1 John 2:22). Among the heretic teachings in the Christian church today is the denial of Jesus who bought sinful man with his own blood.
