Discrimination Against Age: Too Old to Live and Too Young to Die

Discrimination against age is a societal evil that's being practiced not only in the Western hemisphere, but also in non-Western nations. Despite the proverbs, sayings and scriptures found in the Christian Bible speaking against such mind-sets, this ill continues to exist and persist. The biblical scripture of I Peter 5:5 which says, "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder..." is only one of many that remind us that the wisdom of respectable older Americans should be honored. We had a much safer and more courteous society when these "old fogey" beliefs were held, practiced and passed on.
College After 50 and Discrimination Against Age
What I find senseless are some of the statements that are made about people who have barely reached their 50's. Some have the silly notion that you start losing the activity of brain cells after 40 so they must be pretty worn out by 50. This is why one woman's son thought it was ridiculous for her to return to college after 50. How would she manage to get information processed by her gray matter?
AARP now offers their services to people 40 and over. That was unheard of in times past. Even their name reveals their original purpose--to assist RETIRED people. Who has retired by the age of 40? Some will argue that people over 40 can't work with computers. Therefore, they are of little use to employers in this computerized age. Such an excuse is without support. I have a friend in his early 40's who lives in a large city in Ecuador. Despite his great physical strength and stamina, he's often rejected for even manual labor in favor of younger workers. Where does the computer excuse fit in now? Why is he enduring discrimination against age?
If people would stop and think about some of these attitudes, they would realize that the long list of things that they don't think older people can do amounts to saying that they can't really live life. They can't learn, work on computers, do manual labor or have fun, yet if they die under the age of even 75, people are quick to say, "Oh he/she was too young to die." Okay, they're too old to really live life, yet they're too young to be in the grave. What then are they the right age to be doing?
Ludicrous ideas and mind-sets leading to discrimination against age, unjust treatment and dishonor of various members of a society will always persist to some extent. This is why it's very important for each individual to know his or her own worth and refuse to march to the music that others make for him or her, especially when these others are out of tune themselves.
