Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Just as people from all walks of life are receiving the Son of God as their Lord and Savior, so are people from all age groups, including the elderly. Whatever may be the opinion of others regarding the usefulness of the elderly in Christian ministry, it is God who calls, ordains, equips and gives strength to his servants to do his will and fulfill his purposes in the earth.
The Bible is the final word and example to all who will live to please God, including the elderly. Consequently, encouragement is offered by scripture that recounts the real lives of actual elderly servants of God who lived and faced the same fears and discrimination as their brethren of today face--even from other brethren.
Abraham, although called before he entered old age, is seen obtaining mighty things in his ripe old age by his unwaivering faith in God. He didn't allow anyone or any reasoning of his own to deter him from doing all that he was called to do in his walk with the Lord. The elderly believer has a most encouraging and powerful account of the mind-set of Abraham, the spiritual father of all who believe. Romans 4:16 - 22 says, "...Abraham who is the father of us all (believers), (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations) before him whom he believed, even God who quickeneth the dead and calleth those things which be not as though they were, who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations according to that which was spoken. So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead (very old) when he was about an hundred years old, neither the deadness of Sara's womb. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief but was strong in faith, giving glory to God and being fully persuaded that what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse. I've been asked to teach a one hour bible study once a month to a group of elderly at a local nursing homes. I have never taught that age group - have always done a verse by verse but am told that they really respond to bible stores which is also good to the time constraint. Is there some kind of book of small teachings (based on bible stories) that you would recommend for me to look for that this group would respond to. I'm kind of lost and do not want to turn them down as I think it could be a wonderful ministry. Thank you.

To Susan:
Our real-life experience conducting Bible study with the senior population has been extremely successful using any of the material from the Council of Elders: Christian Encouragement for Elderly Christians. Not only is it designed to conduct Bible study, but to stimulate thought-provoking discussion and "pull out" the wisdom of grand and great-grandparents.
