The Christian Bible on Spirits of the Deceased, Necromancy, and Seance - Part II
If you have not read, The Christian Bible on Spirits of the Deceased, Necromancy, and Seance - Part I, you might not benefit from reading this second part, which is a continuation of the study.
The Christian Bible on Necromancy and the Conducting of a Seance
The word of God says, "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire (be sacrificed), or that useth divination (fortune-telling), or an observer of times (astrologer), or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits (demons), or a wizard, or a NECROMANCER (one who conjures up and/or talks to the dead, performs a seance). For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
We learned in part I of our study that it is not possible to contact spirits of the deceased via use of a Ouija board, seance, or the practice of necromancy. Again, Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 teaches us that when a person dies, his spirit returns to the Lord. Why then would God forbid the impossible? Because the attempt to contact real ghosts from the hereafter is to enter into great deception from the occult. Familiar spirits are demonic guides with whom a witch, medium, or other practitioner of
the occult maintains a relationship. A familiar spirit is an unholy angelic being. Remember, we learned earlier that angelic beings, whether holy or unholy, have the power to transform themselves into the form of man (see
part I).
The Witch of Endor: The Necromancer and the Seance
It's often stated that calling up the spirits of the deceased from beyond the grave via a seance must be possible since we read in 1 Samuel 28:7-14 that Samuel was called up from the dead. Some Christians will answer that it wasn't truly Samuel that appeared. However, we can't change the fact that the Bible indeed says it was the real Samuel.
In 1 Samuel 28:11-15, we read, "Then said the woman (the witch of Endor), Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up: and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived (knew as fact) that it was Samuel...."
Notice that scripture says that the woman "cried with a loud voice". Why? Scripture reveals that she was AFRAID. We read: "And the king said unto her, Be not AFRAID". Why was she afraid? She was afraid because she knew it wasn't her power, that it wasn't the familiar spirit (demon guide that attempts to mimic the Holy Spirit) that lived in her that had called up Samuel during the seance. If she thought she was calling up Samuel, and that she had the power to do so, why was she so afraid? After all, she conducted seances regularly. What was so different about this time? The difference is that she knew that the figure that she saw was NOT the working of a familiar spirit but rather the actual Samuel appeared.
In scripture we read that the woman says: "...For thou art Samuel..." She also asks, "Why hast thou DECEIVED me?" If Samuel is who she truly expected to call up in the first place, why does she says she has been deceived? Did she achieve what she wanted? No, she didn't. She says she is deceived because she understood she was supposed to be using demonic power which would pretend to be the real Samuel, intended to deceive. However, this isn't what happened, which caused her great fear. Samuel was truly called up, but not by the seance or the familiar spirit that dwelled in her, or by Saul, or by any other man or entity. This woman knew that to call up the real Samuel or any deceased person was absolutely impossible which is why there was the need to deceive through a demonic imitation of the deceased by the familiar spirit (demon) she worked with. This same deception is taking place in today's seances and so-called "prophetic" messages from spirits of the deceased transmitted through
psychics.
Unlike many who practice
witchcraft in modern times, the witches, warlocks, and practitioners of necromancy of old were well aware of the demonic power they used, and only seldom did they mistake it for the power of God.
