Calvina, the young battered wife of Duane, is in desperate need of a new start in life. Will her jealous husband, the mad man with whom she had been unequally yoked, prove too much to ever hope for a chance of staying together--a chance to fix her troubled marriage?
We encourage you to read the two main character profiles before reading the first chapter. The biblical scripture of James 4:7 says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." Some people, including Christian believers, might understand the instruction to resist the devil as a command to literally and physically fight against the works of Satan, which are the works of the flesh. According to the word of God, the works of the flesh include, but are not limited to: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wraths, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkeness, revellings, and such like...(Galatians 5:19-21).
There certainly are tangible, audible, and visible ways to resist the devil when it comes to attempts to prevent and punish the works of the flesh. For example, there are laws against murder and drunkeness while operating a motor vehicle. Nevertheless, there are no laws against hatred and envy. A man can harbor as much hatred and jealousy as he wants and remain innocent according to the laws of the land. Only after that hatred and/or envy causes him to commit a crime like murder does he become a criminal in the eyes of the law. Police officers arrest, a judge pronounces sentence, and jailers keep criminals confined. These actions are among the tangible, visible, and audible ways to resist the devil; but this is not to what James 4:7 refers. How can hatred and envy be resisted with physical actions? They can't, like so many other works of the flesh. James 4:7 does not refer exclusively to physical warfare, but also to spiritual warfare.
Zechariah 4:6 reminds true soldiers of Christ of this truth. The scripture says, "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord...." The apostle Paul revealed, "Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the whiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:11-12).
