Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Believers in Christ, when struggling to hold on to their faith in God, often think they're the only ones battling depression, despair, weariness, and perplexity over what God is doing--or not doing. Even the prophet Elias thought he was alone during a time when people sought to kill him, but he learned that he wasn't the only saint left in Israel who had clung to the Lord no matter what. Romans 11:2-4 reads, "Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, Lord, they have killed thy prophets and digged down thine altars, and I am left alone, and they seek my life? But, what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal?" (KJV, Romans 11;1-4). I see Christian encouragement in God's response to his servant Elias. First, the Lord spoke of the thousands of servants he still had in the land and of the fact that he had reserved them. This revealed at least two very important things to Elias--not everyone around him was an enemy and as God had the power to keep them so he would keep him also.
Christian encouragement is essential for the exercise of your faith in God because Satan attacks the mind--a place where the Spirit of God should dwell. Recently, I came across a young lady's online compilation of scriptures to encourage her brothers and sisters in Christ. I believe God used her beautiful post to reach out to his servants around the world struggling with their faith. The hardest and most vicious battle is the one for the mind which believers must learn to guard against the voice of the enemy because only God's word can destroy his arguments for why you shouldn't have faith in God.
When the devil tells you that even what God has said he will do is impossible, remember that Jesus said that, "...the things which are impossible with men are possible with God" (Luke 18:27). When the enemy suggests that your faith in God isn't worth the turmoil it's causing and that you should solve your own problems even if you sin, recall that the Lord's word declares that, "...all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). When the adversary whispers to you that you are all alone, remind yourself that the Savior said, "...I will never leave thee nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5). When the liar warns you that Christian encouragement is futile because you have no more strength or faith in God, stand on the Almighty's promise to not only give you rest, but also to enable you to do all things in him. Jesus' word is, "...I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28) and the apostle Paul said, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians 4:13). When the thief wants to intensify frustration and worry, be obedient to the scripture of 1 Peter 5:7 which says: "Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you."
One very important aspect in Christian encouragement is the need to realize that faith in God doesn't equal inaction on the part of the believer who is to live out the biblical definition of faith. He is to see God regarding the part he can and must do for himself because, "...faith, if it hath not works, is dead being alone" (James 2:17). When waiting on God's blessing, whatever you have asked for that's within his perfect will, don't make the mistake of sitting and doing nothing. Ask God to inspire you, to speak to you regarding what he expects you to do for yourself, however much work is involved. The Promised Land which God himself appointed to Israel was not taken without a war in which the children of Israel had to physically fight. Be encouraged, encourage someone else, and persevere in your faith in God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
