God's Punishment in the New Testament: The Case of Ananias and Sapphira
Ananias and Sapphira Lie to the Holy Ghost
There was a time when Christians, at least the Christians in the part of the world to which the passage of Acts 4:32-37 refers, suffered no lack of basic provisions such as food and shelter. It was during this time that a man named Ananias, his wife Sapphira, and many other Christians were reminded that even under the New Covenant of grace, God's punishment is sometimes swift and very frightening.
The scripture of Acts 5:1-11 says, "But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost (died) and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up and carried him out and buried him. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Then
Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Then fell she down straightway at his feet and yielded up the ghost, and the young men came in and found her dead and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
The Lessons of Acts 5:1-11
There are many lessons to be extracted from this passage. The reality of
God's punishment under the New Testament the serious trouble into which someone can fall from telling a lie, and the danger of making assumptions are all valuable truths seen in Acts 5:1-11. God's punishment for Ananias and Sapphira was death. The apostle Peter pointed out to them that they had no need to lie. They could have kept their possessions or all of the money for which they sold their land. Finally, they made the grave mistake of assuming that they were simply lying to a man, not to the
Holy Spirit.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
