The Punishment of God Under Grace: The Case of King Herod and the Angel of the Lord
The Wickedness of King Herod
King Herod purposed to use his political power to persecute the Christian church (Acts 12:1). He brutally murdered James, the brother of the apostle John after which he had the apostle Peter imprisoned. The murder of James had pleased the Jews (Acts 12:3), so Herod decided not only to have Peter imprisoned, He decided to kill him as well. Although the king was permitted to "get by" with his evil deeds, he would not escape God's punishment that was to come swiftly.
The scripture of Acts 12:20-23 reads, "And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon, but they came with one accord to him and having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace, because their country was nourished by the king's country. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory. And he was eaten of worms and gave up the ghost (died)."
This is one of the solemn reminders that God's punishment is very real and can be terrifying. God said, "I am the Lord. That is my name and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images" (Isaiah 42:8).
