Signs of the End Times in the Parable of the Good Samaritan
Sadly, the United States, particularly in the larger cities, is becoming a place where very few people take to heart the parable of the good Samaritan. News reports tell of individuals who died on public streets and in public places while surrounded by people. Some of them bled to death while the public stood and gawked at them or walked by. Others slipped into eternity while strangers approached them hoping to find money or other valuables that they could steal. These victims died because no one desired to act out in real life the parable of the good Samaritan. What does this have to do with the signs of the end times? Everything.
Some people might find it incredible that people who are supposedly civilized would watch someone die without lifting a finger to even call 911. (Emergency medical services (EMS) in most parts of the United States is accessed by calling 911 from any public or private phone of any type.} Even if someone doesn't want to go as far as responding to the need like the compassionate man did in the parable of the good Samaritan, he or she can at least respond like a good citizen of a civilized nation. Many who find the rampant, barbaric behavior and the void of compassion that is being seen are unable to explain what is taking place. They question why people all over the world are growing worse to the point of being understandably labeled as "dogs" and "monsters." God's word, however, foretold all of the signs of the end times, which include the absolute moral decay of many men, women, and even children.
The Ugly Signs of the End Times Revealed in the Parable of the Good Samaritan
The scripture of II Timothy 3:1 warns, "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of thsoe that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than of God, having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof, from such turn away."
We see that two of the many dangerous signs of the end times include people who are "fierce" or violent and those who are "without natural affection", which is to lack compassion. This is also why the Lord warned that, "...because iniquity (wickedness/sin) shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold (Matthew 24:12). The thieves in the parable of the good Samaritan represent the many people in the world who are fierce enough to kill and those who are without natural affection, enabling them to watch the death of their victims without compassion. Despite this and other prophecies regarding the signs of the end times, each individual can choose to be like the rescuer in the parable of the good Samaritan of which Christ spoke.
The parable of the good Samaritan as told by the Lord Jesus is found in Luke 10:30-37. Christ said, "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by a chance there came down a certain priest that way and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence and gave them to the host and said unto him, Take care of him and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee."
Perhaps those who insist on rejecting the call to have at least some of the compassion that the rescuer in the parable of the good Samaritan had should consider the Biblical warnings to those who turn a deaf ear to the cries of the poor. What will become of those who insist on remaining deaf to the call to show compassion when needed?
"Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard" (Proverbs 21:13).
