Bible Contradictions: Do They Exist?
The biblical scripture of II Timothy 2:15 instructs, "Study to shew (show) thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Right division refers to knowing how to consider all scripture as a whole upon which understanding of God's word is built line upon line and precept upon precept (Isaiah 28:9-10). A person will otherwise end up with erroneous conclusions about what the Bible does and does not say which will eventually lead to the shame that it is to declare that there are contradictions in the Bible.
"Bible Contradictions" on the Subject of Peace on Earth
Many people, including those who identify themselves as Christians, conclude that everyone who even remotely believes in Jesus of Nazareth should be working for peace on Earth and good will to men because during the time of the Savior's birth, the heavenly host praised God saying, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men" (KJV, Luke 2:14). They assume that the peace of which this scripture speaks is to come to pass on this present Earth. However, this is not the message that the Bible puts forth except to those who don't know that the Lord Jesus himself warned when he said, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth. I came not to send peace, but a sword (deadly war). For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household" (Matthew 10:34-36).
So, don't the scriptures of Luke 2:14 and Matthew 10:34-36 demonstrate that there are contradictions in the Bible; the one speaks about peace on Earth while the other talks about a sword on Earth. No, they are not contradictory--at least not to the one who understands that the Bible speaks of three different types of peace. There's individual peace with God through obedience to Christ (Colossians 1:20), specific situations (not international peace) in which peace on this present Earth is achieved through Christ among individuals who would never have peace outside of Christ (Ephesians 2:14), and international peace that will be reality only in the coming Peaceable Kingdom in the new Earth in which peace will reign so strongly that even the predator prey system in the animal kingdom will be destroyed, (Isaiah 65:17-25). Ignorance of these basic biblical truths opens the door to erroneously believing that there are a host of contradictions in the Bible. The subject of peace on Earth according to scripture is not a simple one and one that shouldn't be tackled by those who don't understand that it's necessary to know what type of peace is being dealt with in any given passage.
The important thing to remember is that an individual's decision to be at peace with God through faithful obedience to Christ invites hatred and persecution from those who are terribly disturbed by any presence of Christ--this is the sword of which Jesus repeatedly warned his followers throughout scripture. No, there are no contradictions in the Bible.
