Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Hypocrisy within the Christian church has been around since early New Testament times and it's evident that it existed among God's people during the Old Testament. Although much has been preached against the Christian hypocrite, not much has been said about the often forgotten scriptures instructing how to react to the preaching of God's word when it is put forth by a hypocritical preacher.
It's only natural to shun advice, exhortation, and warning from someone who hasn't been faithful to the counsel they're giving others. However, Christians who are truly seeking to grow spiritually, will allow biblical scripture to correct any belief contrary to God's word. Numerous people are often surprised to find out that many of their thoughts that seem most logical are in disagreement with the scriptures.
Since the Bible condemns hypocrisy and warns those who practice it, it seems logical that the words of the Christian hypocrite need not be heeded by anyone. However, as surprising as it may sound, the Bible lets us know that there are times when the Lord does command that even the preaching of the "Christian" hypocrite be regarded. When are these times? Simply put, when the message is Bible based, it should be received wholeheartedly, even when the messenger hasn't himself received it.
The scribes and the Pharisees appear repeatedly in the New Testament scriptures. They are usually seen resisting Jesus and are often rightfully labeled as hypocrites. Nonetheless, when they taught the truths by which even they themselves did not live, Jesus warned the people to listen to them. He told the people to do according to their words, when they were true, but not according to their disobedient deeds.
Matthew 23:1-3 reads, "Then spake Jesus to the multitude and to his disciples, saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. All therefore whatsoever they bid (tell) you (to) observe, that observe and do. But, do not ye after their works, for they say and do not."
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
