Biblical Scripture: No Longer the Word of God?

Many Christian churches, at least in the United States, now display modern "Christian" sayings on signs that they place somewhere on the grounds of the church for the public to see as they walk or ride by. The usual is to periodically change the message that appears to supposedly get around to provoking thought on God in people who don't know the Lord. One such saying goes something like, "God desires spiritual fruit, not religious nuts." While some might find the saying cute, what does it mean to people who aren't familiar with Christian biblical scripture or who don't understand what the fruit of the Spirit is? It means nothing to many of them.

What good then does it do to display such a saying? Why wouldn't a Christian church take every opportunity to share Christian biblical scripture, which is the word of God they profess to serve instead of cute sayings made up by man? Is biblical scripture no longer the word of God to be placed above the most "clever" words of man?

Purpose of the Word of God



Although a good amount of biblical scripture pertains to the believer, much of the word of God speaks to the unbeliever to convince him of his need for Christ as Savior. Many converts to Christianity were convicted as they read the Christian Bible after which they received Jesus as Lord. Biblical scripture is the word of God to encourage the believer, convict a person of sin and warn the wicked.

Preferring to display to the public man's empty sayings rather than show the word of God might be said to have come from doubt whether people who are unfamiliar with biblical scripture would understand what's being said. This is a very lame excuse because there are many scriptures that anyone with even an elementary education can understand. Among the many people who would walk or ride by these signs in front of churches are adulterers, fornicators, thieves, liars, and practitioners of witchcraft. There are also the violent, those who are confused over who Jesus is, people who are in all types of bondage among which are some who desire to be free.

What's difficult to understand about the following biblical scriptures? They preach the word of God to these souls and could be displayed publicly instead of "cute" useless sayings that obviously aren't stirring people to think about God, sin or salvation as American churches continue to empty out. The Lord told his followers to preach his gospel, not the gospel of man (Mark 16:15). There's ample opportunity for a true Christian church that takes the time to display public signs to do this. The following scriptures are only a very few examples of the ones that could be displayed in obedience to God:

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers...(1 Cor. 6:9).

...Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life (1 John 20).

Now the works of the flesh (sin) are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft...(Galatians 5:19-20).

Let him that stole steal no more; but rather let him labor...(Ephesians 4:28).

Perhaps the Christian church needs a sign to be reminded of the duty of God's people to warn the wicked when he declared, "When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand" (Ezekiel 3:18).
