The Good and Bad of Christian Fiction

A scene from what is considered a Christian fiction book depicts two characters being pursued by officials of the NWO (New World Order) during the Tribulation. The tribulation is generally understood to be a period of time before the world ends during which Christians are persecuted globally. In a scene of the book, one of the two characters needs to verify if the other is a genuine servant of God before trusting her. She therefore asks the woman if she may test the mark or seal of God in her forehead. She attempts to rub the mark off. When it remains visible, she concludes that the woman is a true believer.

The scene in that "Christian" of testing the mark of God is most likely based on the scripture of Revelation 9:4. The passage speaks of a seal of God being placed in the forehead of the saints during the Tribulation. A very important biblical truth that could have easily been taught in a most entertaining fashion, was instead, twisted in that work of Christian fiction.

The seal of God spoken of in Revelation was a seal that was not even made to be visible to the eyes of man, but to other very strange beings. This truth is clearly put forth in the passage of the scripture--a prime example of how important it is for people to read the Bible for themselves to separate Christian fact from Christian fiction. It would have been a simple manner to weave into the story, the Bible's actual instructions on how to test if someone believes in the God of the Holy Bible. These instructions are often overlooked and misunderstood. Who Was Jesus? Was He the Son of God?, a thought-provoking study, challenges even the knowledge of Bible scholars on the subject.

The reading of entertaining and scripturally accurate Christian fiction should never replace Bible study, but, it certainly can enhance comprehension. Did not the Lord Jesus use short stories called "parables"? Although parables were sometimes difficult to understand, they often aided comprehension because of their illustration of truth in action.

The short story, or parable of the sower is one of many biblical passages that explains the danger of failing to get understanding. Jesus taught that, "a sower went forth to sow. (And) when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside and the fowls came and devoured them up" (KJV, Mat. 13.3-4).

Later, Jesus explained this part of the parable of the sower, teaching that, "when anyone heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the wayside" (Mat. 13.19).

Jesus' teaching was wonderfully illustrated through the use of the short story of the sower--a form of Christian fiction that illustrates truth.
