Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
The Bible is very clear regarding the importance of Christian obedience not only to God but also to the laws of the land in which a believer lives. Law and order is of God just as anarchy is of Satan. This subject has caused some confusion among well-meaning Christians because, due to sin in the world, most of the laws of the land are stained with corruption and ungodliness. An in-depth study on how believers cope with and suffer under political leaders is beyond the scope of this article. However, there is the need for believers to understand the importance of rightly dividing the word of God on every subject and question. including Christian obedience to the laws of the land.
If God's word commands Christian obedience to ungodly laws of the land, how is it that a believer can obey opposing forces? Again, the right division of biblical scripture provides the much needed answer. Is there ever a time when a Christian simply cannot obey both God and an ungodly government? The Bible gives many examples demonstrating how the servant of Christ is to respond when facing such a dangerous situation.
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus' words to his disciples are recorded when he commanded, "Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you..."
Satanic opposition quickly rises against the followers of Christ in the fulfillment of the mandate in Matthew. Often, such opposition is very strong because it usually has the backing of the laws of the land. What should a believer do? How can he obey the government and his Lord at the same time? He can't. The apostle Peter, as well as other believers found themselves facing such a situation. They were preachers of the gospel in obedience to Jesus, but their faith in God placed them in trouble with the council who declared it illegal to preach salvation in Christ. When they were brought before rulers, what was their "defense"? How did they answer? Not only were they witnesses of Christ to those to whom they had to answer, they made clear the righteous motivation for their decision to preach Christ even in disobedience to the mandate not to preach him.
The New Testament scripture of Acts 5:27-29 reads, "And when they had brought them they set them before the council and the high priest asked them, saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? (Jesus) and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men." Christian obedience to the laws of the land is mandated by God as long as that obedience does not interfere with obedience to God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
