Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Although the 1800s are not generally considered "end times," they are, because the apostle Paul spoke of himself living in end times. If he lived during the era when it was said that the time is short, certainly Samuel Morse did also lived in end times. In the early 1800s a man named Samuel Morse conversed with men over dinner while sailing back home to America from Europe. They discussed Ampere, a French man who experimented with electricity. They also mentioned Ben Franklin who discovered the ability of electricity to travel almost instantly through wires regardless of their length.
The conversation gave Samuel Morse an idea--the possibility of sending messages instantly from one city to another. So, what did Samuel Morse invent? He worked with his idea, experimenting with electricity produced by batteries. He made electrical currents to pass along wires, some in short bursts which became dots and others in long ones making dashes. By putting dots and dashes into patterns to represent each letter of the alphabet, he created what's now known as Morse code.
In his excitement to see his invention put into use so that messages could be sent and received between distant locations within seconds, he sought support. He covered some wire in rubber and ran it under the water between the city of New York and a nearby island. He was ready to demonstrate Morse code to a large crowd eager to see what sounded like magic. But, it didn't work. Unfortunately, the captain of a ship that had become tangled in the wire had cut it and dismissed it as some kind of fishing line.
Samuel Morse had to wait some time before he could again find funding for his project. This time he strung wire from poles between Baltimore and Washington. The people gathered around him the second time would witness the first message ever transmitted over an outdoor telegraph line. Samuel Morse was in Washington, his partner for the test stood waiting in Baltimore to receive the message. A woman in Washington with Morse handed him a test message to send to his partner in Baltimore. It said, "What hath God wrought?" In seconds the crowd saw a message return from Baltimore that said--W h a t h a t h G o d w r o u g h t?
In those days, to mention God didn't invite hostility, weird looks, surprise or any other odd behavior. The invention of Samuel Morse was truly brilliant, but he and others had the good sense to acknowledge God's supremacy in all things. If the brains of men could conceive and bring to reality such feats, what must be the knowledge of God who gave man his power to reason?
Today messages, photographs, and video can be sent even into space without wires, but none of that diminishes the amazing thing that Morse accomplished. There's much crime that takes place in cyber space and with many electronic devices. Nevertheless, through technology such as the Internet, satellite dishes, and radio waves, many people are hearing the gospel of the Lord Jesus for the first time. Many of them thank God for what he has wrought.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
