Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Often when Christians speak of the assurance of salvation, they're referring to an acceptance or rejection of the "once saved, always saved" doctrine. However, seldom is emphasis placed on the difference between receiving salvation by accepting Christ as Savior and daily walking in salvation by the continual doing of the will of God. Although it's the will of God, according to the scripture of 2 Peter 3:9 that all men would come to repentance, many will not because they choose never to submit to the Lord. Others respond to an initial conviction by the Holy Spirit, step onto the road of salvation, but refuse to walk where the road becomes dangerous and/or unpleasant.
It is to these people that very specific scriptures speak warning regarding God's definition of the assurance of salvation, not man's. Frequently, the Lord Jesus spoke to His disciples concerning events that were to take place at various times in the future. He told of His crucifixion ahead of time (Mat. 16:21). He forewarned His disciples that days are coming when they will be thrown out of what are supposed to be houses of worship by people who are supposed to be worshipers of Him. They will even be murdered by people who'll believe they're serving God in such killings (St. John 16:2). The apostle Peter received the prophecy from Jesus that in his old age he would be martyred for his faith in the Son of God.
Jesus told Peter, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself and walkedst whither thou wouldest. But, when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands and another shall gird thee and carry thee whither thou wouldest not" (St. John 21:18). The verse following this one was a solemn confirmation of the suffering Peter would endure in old age. St. John 21:19 reads, "This spake he (Jesus) signifying by what death he (Peter) should glorify God. And when he had spoken this he saith unto him, Follow me." It's generally believed that Peter was crucified.
To follow Jesus is to do the will of God. To do the will of God is the only assurance of salvation. Is such a conclusion truly given by scripture? The answer is most definitely affirmative. According to the words that Jesus has spoken concerning the harrowing news that some people will receive "in the last day", there are many people who now call Him Lord in vain.
The passage of Matthew 7:21 records Jesus having said, "Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." No, it is not the will of God that every one of His servants die a martyr, the example given that involved Peter was only to demonstrate the seriousness with which the words of Jesus are to be received because they are sure to come to pass.
Nowadays, it has become popular for individual Christians and "Christian" churches to maintain a policy of not "proselytizing" anyone. This is an evasive way of saying that they don't share the gospel of Jesus with the lost despite the fact that such a decision is not in agreement with the biblically revealed will of God who doesn't want anyone to perish. Churches will set up clothing rooms to clothe the physical body, but remain silent about the spiritual clothing supplied only through obedience to Christ (Rev. 3:5). They will feed the hungry natural food, but let them starve spiritually. Jesus not only fed the multitudes physical food, He also repeatedly instructed them to repent and believe the gospel (Mat. 14:16-21, Mark 1:15).
Jesus commanded His disciples on several occasions and in no uncertain terms to, "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). This is the will of God who asks, "And why call ye me Lord, Lord and do not the things which I say" (Luke 6:46)?
No individual can have the assurance of salvation if he stubbornly refuses to do the will of God. This includes sharing the gospel of Jesus. This is only one aspect of the Lord's will that is revealed in scripture.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
