Heavenly Creatures in the Bible
Four Heavenly Creatures Described
Many people, including Christians, think of angels as being the only other living beings besides the Godhead who dwell in heaven. Are the angels of God the only heavenly creatures who inhabit the kingdom of God? No, they are not. There are other creatures called beasts who dwell in the presence of the Most High. Why is such information mentioned in God's word? What significance can it be to the believer? First, the Bible is the believer's instruction book in righteousness and was left as an example of how to please God. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
There's much interest nowadays in the occult, the paranormal, and the New Age which, sadly, has infiltrated an alarming number of Christian churches. Subtle anti-Christian teachings abound on all subjects, including the creatures of the spirit realm--those who are in the kingdom of darkness and those who belong to the kingdom of God. People tend to equate what appears dreadful to the kingdom of Satan and what appears to be lovely to the kingdom of God. That mindset, however, can cloud one's spiritual sight because Christians must remember that Satan, the prince of evil, can transform himself into an angel of light. The passage of II Corinthians 11:13-15 warns, "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness whose end shall be according to their works."
The heavenly creatures described in the Bible do not have the physical appearance that many Christians or non-C
Christians would expect them to have. In fact, these heavenly creatures have a frightful description and sound like they are the product of the very active imagination of someone who writes science fiction about the paranormal. One of Jesus' apostles, John, while living on the island of Patmos, was given a glimpse into heaven as he was taken there in spirit by the
Spirit of God. The written account he left in the New Testament book of Revelation reveals the existence of amazing heavenly creatures who live in the presence of the Lord and who
worship him.
Revelation 4:6-9 reads, "And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal; and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honor and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth forever and ever...."
The revelation of these as well as other heavenly creatures mentioned in the Bible is not for the stirring up of curiosity in the paranormal. One of the things Christians can learn, however, is that things and beings of the spirit world of darkness or light are not always as they would expect.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
